Motherboard Dead?

Hi all,

My brother asked me to build him a really low budget computer for him so I set out buying mainly used parts from that well known auction site.

Just got round to putting it all together this afternoon and it appears either the motherboard or cpu is dead.

The system powers up and the fan levels seem normal (not full speed which occurs on my system when the RAM isnt pushed in fully) so i thought everything was ok but nothing is being displayed on screen.

I immediately pointed this problem to the graphics card but after trying it in my system it worked fine, next I tried the RAM in my system and again it worked fine, so to me this only leaves the CPU or motherboard at fault, correct?

Now I dont fancy taking my system to bits to try the CPU but is there anything else I can do as I am 100% out of ideas after checking all the wiring 10 times over etc, I have done many builds in my time so its not like this is a 1st attempt but it just has me baffled!

As already mentioned most parts including the motherboard + cpu were purchased used so they have a good chance to be dead although were stated working in the auction although I accept this is the risk you take when trying to build a low budget system.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks, Sam

It could be that maybe the motherboard doesn't have the latest bios that is compatible with the cpu you are using on it? It might also be a good idea to list the gear you bought so people can see what it is :)

Did you buy the CPU and MoBo together? If thats the case, you should demand money back, he also has to through some trades description law :)

The board is a Gigabyte GA-945P-S3 and the CPU is a Dual Core, one of the pentium variety, I cant remember the exact model but it was definatly compatable.

I am tempted to just bite the bullet and purchase a new motherboard as all the symptoms seem to be pointing that way but feel free to give me anymore advice before I do so :)

Took the cmos battery out, removed power cable and tried to power up to clear all power, left for a minute or so and powered back up but still no joy

older boards will eventually start to break down. Seems like you have partial power but not a lot more.

Choices are

1. Bin both

2. see if you can pick up another mobo cheap to test the CPU in that. but again the MB is likely to be old and well used so you may inccur the same problem again in the not so distant future.

On the bright side... nothing ventured.... nothing gained :)

If it's one of the newer generation ones E2xxx, then odds are it won't work. I've had to junk a 965 based board in favour of a cheap P35 to get newer CPU support.
