Just before I format to see if anything nasty has happened...

My ethernet started dropping connection about once every 30 seconds. Thought it might be the cable but don't have another to test so swapped to USB wifi dongle and get the same result.

Thought it was my Asus router but iphone and Ipad don't drop connection on wifi at all.

Seems to be only my desktop PC having problems.

Windows 10? There were issues brought on by an update the other week, try checking for updates manually as I believe they've since fixed it.

Make and boot from a Linux live USB. Manjaro, Debian non-free live, Mint, whatever. Don't worry about the 'non-free' thing with Debian, it just means it includes closed-source firmware (as opposed to only 'free' open source software). It doesn't mean that it costs you anything. If you get stuck then Manjaro KDE version or Debian Mate are excellent and both fast.

Boot from the USB and then run your tests again. If the same hardware now works OK, you know it's a problem with your Windows 10 install (or something installed on it, e.g. AV software). If not then you know to look further upstream. Your router being at fault is unlikely because (1) both ethernet and wifi are affected, which are unlikely to fail at the same time, and (2) your other devices work OK which basically precludes a router fault. The Windows 10 issue didn't only affect VM users, and it wasn't fixed by releasing and renewing the DHCP IP address (that only fixed it temporarily, and only for some users).
