Im some what of a noob with motherboards im looking to build my wife a half decent pc. Was just wondering what i should be looking for in a motherboard, im thinking maybe an i5 but i dont want to spend much so any recommendation on boards and cpus will be greatly appreciated

The latest Edition of custom pc has a feature 'Build a pc for £410' which lists the Asus M4A88T-M (£60ish) and the AMD Phenom II x4840 3.2Ghz (£78ish) as the best budget mobo and cpu :) Hope that helps

You could be specified a £30 or £300 motherboard.

Usually it works the other way round. You decide what processor you want and find an appropriate motherboard.

Do you need onboard graphics or not?

What is the PC to be used for?

You're better off deciding how much you want to spend in total, what the PC is to be used for and if you just require a base unit or do you need an operating system, monitor, keyboard, mouse etc.

Once you have all this information then make a thread in General Hardware asking for a PC spec.

Im looking to buy it bit by bit, im hoping to get some kind of quad core as i want the power, graphics isnt to much of a problem, and only need the tower

There's not really much point in buying bit by bit because until you have enough parts for a working PC they'll just sit there gathering dust.

You're better of just saving up until you have enough to get everything together.

"graphics isnt to much of a problem"

That's simple, maybe a Gigabyte or Asus quad cored mobo with onboard VGA will do.
This can save money on dedicated video card and a higer rating of the PSU as well.

These 2 brands making nice mobo, they comes with series of economical mobo that won't cost too much though.

Hope this helps!
