Hi guys so my gigabyte z97x motherboard is dead and I need to buy a new one for my nzxt phantom tower case.. My CPU is a i7 4790k with a evga supernova 850w psu and other components if needed for me to say.. I basically want a good quality board and not too expensive as I have low budget. Thank you

1150 old Now, Chances are the Warranty run out ,
even if there was a little left they would stop selling them some years ago & if you lucky offer a 1151 skylake or kabylake for around the same price,
that would mean upgrading your CPU & Memory to DDR 4

Z97 only launched in May 2014 so it may still be in warranty as Gigabyte has a 3 year warranty. Get in touch with them and see what they say. They may be able to fix it or have a refurbed board in stock.

Really nothing to buy on OC UK in Z97 Range due to Age of Z97, New Motherboards been Discontinued some time ago,
after the Z97 We had Sky lake followed by Kaby lake & now Coffee Lake ,
Maybe O.C UK can help you out or have a Z97 Board not listed hanging about somewhere,
Otherwise it be EBAY for a Used 2nd hand Full ATX motherboard .

Any board that has the LGA1150 socket will work although im not sure how some boards will work with the overclocking of the k series chip

You need a Z87 or Z97 board to be able to overclock. One thing to take into account on Z87, H81, B85, H87 boards is that there is a chance that they will have a out of date bios installed and the 4790k will not work in them without flashing a newer bios. The problem with that is that you need a original Haswell cpu to flash it. I bet a lot of people built their pc's up and have never falshed the bios. Same thing with people who have prebuilt pc's. The only way to be certain that the 4790k will work is to buy a Z97 board as they launched at the same time. Some Asus boards have USB Flashback where you don't even need a cpu installed to be able to flash the bios but that tends to be on the higher end boards. If buying second hand ask which bios is installed before buying and look the board up on the motherboard manufacturers website to see which version is needed for your cpu.

Only Z97 or H97 are guaranteed to work out of the box with a 4790k. Anything else may require a bios update. No they are not sold anymore as they are 4/5 generations old now. Still a cracking cpu though and I won't be getting rid of mine anytime soon. Your best option is to pick up a second hand board on the likes of Ebay, just be sure to ask the seller what bios revision it is running and then check on the manufacturers website that that version supports your 4790k. Don't pay over the odds though as a lot of the boards are marked up at ridiculous prices.

The very first reply in this thread linked to a B-grade Z97 board from OCUK. Being B-grade you should be prepared to recieve just the bare board with no accessories. Anything else that is in the box is a bonus.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £50.50
(includes shipping: £10.50)

Ollie2k13 , i would Remove the link ,not allowed to link other sales websites or even The Names of the places , Will have Forum Mod raining hard down on you.

That board is out of stock by the way & may not be back in.

The board will take the 4790k as long as you have bios f5 installed , that bios should already be installed or better due to its one of the first bios rel for that board .

That Micro-ATX B Grade also be fine ,Just a shorter board & loose few PCI slots

You need to Take the panel off your PC Case to see what the board size is , the case might only take upto Micro-ATX.

I7 4790K Still a Great CPU , If you do go for a New Motherboard in the Z170 or Z270 or even the new Coffee Lake ,You need A New Memory Kit DDR4 , Socket 1150 was DDR3 .

Both Z170 Sky lake & Z270 KABY Lake Motherboards Can take the same CPUs upto i7 6700k or i7 7700k

Coffee Lake Z370 Motherboards Takes the New i5 6 core 8600k/ i7 6 core 8700K & Future CPUs

or Can go the AMD CPU route

AMD RYZEN AM4 X370 Motherboards with a Ryzen 1700 8 Core
