Problem is there seem to be no decent micro atx ryzen boards...
Agreed, there are slim pickings for enthusiast boards - none if you're after X370 micro...
However, the B350s chipset is great and there are no huge advantage in clocks compared to the x370s which may appear eventually. You would hit 3.7Ghz comfortably with any flavour b350 board with appropriate cooling - even with the supplied Wraith cooler. *Note this is not supplied with all the X variant of CPUs - i.e. 1600X and above...
The Gigabyte B350 Gaming is the one i have built with and tend to recommend over the forums (Has VRM heatsinks). I've talked through a few Gigabyte Micro builds and the users seem very happy - all attained 3000MHz with XMP with Team Group or Corsair LPX.
Asus, unfortunately, are yet to launch a micro version around the ROG - which may interest you if they were to launch (looking at your present spec)...
My basket at Overclockers UK:
maybe I should just go 7700k? Though don't particularly want quad again.
Agreed, it would feel like a sideways step, especially given your present setup. The Ryzen would give that feel of a full format upgrade plus longevity of socket with added cores/threads for the future - but performance wise you won't get the real life performance boost you're after. Not until more games start to utilise more cores/threads etc -
That said - the 7700K is obviously a great CPU (I'm not trying to pummel you with Ryzen) - but would limit your upgrade path.
I would suggest Coffee Lake - but that would be a considerable wait again as you're already having difficulties with your setup.
If you went with Ryzen - are you looking at 1600 or the 7 series?
For info...my USB issues are my high speed controller keeps malfunctioning requiring a reboot. Seems to be an old z87 issue.
What are the symptoms?
Is the board sat securely on the risers? Or that the backplate isn't interfering with any of the ports? (shot in the dark - but a possible cause).
I'm guessing you've ran through the gamut of possible fixes.
EDIT: I'm blind without my glasses using my laptop in the mornings...
