Motherboard lanes using physX?

Hello all,

So I'm in the market for a new upgrade as my system (although going strong), is starting to show it's age. No matter what the rest of the system turns out to be I'm a bit confused about lanes on the motherboard and the possible performance impact it could have on my system.

Ok so 3 potential scenarios.

[1]Keep Current Graphics Card - GTX 285 OC2
So in this case the motherboard doesn't matter.

[2*]Keep GTX 285 OC2 Card and SLI (finding another on eBay)
In this case what kind of performance does running the two cards have
(as from what I can see on OCUK most boards they all run in x8x8 SLI)

[3*]Get a new GFX card and use the GTX 285 OC2 as a physX card
So in this case adding the 2nd card (since it's not SLI) should not drop the lanes to x8x8
It should be running at x16 x8 right? and again what performance impace would this have if any?

Thank you for any replies and educating me in my ignorance :)

Sell the GTX285 and put the money towards a GTX570 or 580. No need for dedicated physx card with these cards.

Right, well I like the sound of a GTX570 / 580 as a single card is less likely to stumble into the problems a SLI setup might possibly encounter and a 570 is a lot cheaper than 2 470's :D

Could you guys recommend a board that would make the best use of this card? Or shall I make a new thread?

Just wondering where to sell this 258 now :P
