 I have a computer that my grandad has asked me too fix
Ei System 5030 3.06 GHz
- Intel p4 processor
-512MB DDR
-40GB HDD
-4x DVDRW Multi
-On Board SiS651
At first i was thinking the power pack was gone but i tried another one and its still the same. The light is on on the motherboard but when the power button is pushed there is no response what so ever?
Can anybody help me?

have you tried shorting the power switch pins on the motherboard, could be a faulty switch.

do you have any response at all, even if its just a twitch from the fan?

the only thing I can suggest is doing a skeleton build with the bare minimum, just to rule out something like case shorting, or the front usb/audio socket or something.

im not saying your grandad has, but we get several machines in, generally owned by the older generation, where they have tried to force a usb device in to a front socket upside down and damaged it, so it shorts.

iv tried what you suggested but as before the motherboard light is on but there is no other response .
The fan on the power supply wont spin either but will on my computer...

you need to fully clear cmos by removing mb battery and leave it out overnight, then try

could be badly corrupted cmos

bios would stop post, but shouldn't stop psu from spinning up.

i didnt say it wouldnt? if lights on mb are lighting up then psu is getting power to the mb but corrupted cmos will cause it to not boot, just stay lit

could try with only one ram stick installed aswell

but he stated that when pressing the power button nothing happens, not even psu fan spinning, which shouldn't be a result of bios as for bios to work the machine would need to be powered up. the light just means its getting a signal, which it would as psu is not faulty. its not powering up as when the switch pins are shorted the signal is not making its way to the psu, which would be down to a hardware fault somewhere, not bios, coz the psu would need to be running for the mobo to use it. if I'm wrong I apologise, but I'm pretty sure that's right.

yh your right but the op didnt really explain too well,if psu fan isnt spinning somethings wrong if the cpu fan isnt spinning then probably fried something? costs nothing to leave battery out overnight though but cant see it working if no fans cpu and or psu spin up,sorry i just didnt read that post

I agree, going down every free avenue is worth a shot. and also, if you have any spares you can swap out is always a bonus too. just to test ram/cpu are ok before shelling out on another motherboard.
