Gigabyte G41MT-S2P
Nvidia gtx 280
6gb corsair ddr3 ram
WD 250gb HDD
XIGMATEK NRP-VC503 500W Silent Gaming Power Supply Unit 500 Watt PSU

The led light on the card goes green but it still doesn't get recognized by the motherboard. When i first put it in it recognized the pci express adapter but not the card.

The xigmatek psu has two pci-e cables one 6 pin and one 6+2 pin. The 6+2 pin cable doesn't go in all the way except for the 2 pin.

I have tried going into the bios and putting the correct pci express settings. I have also tried resetting the CMOS, but still no luck. Apparently the card should work fine with this motherboard.

I have also tried using pci-e adapters to get this working but still no luck.

Just updated the bios. The graphics card still hasnt been recognized. The card does work and has no faults. The onboard graphics work fine, and the computer runs fine. It just won't recognize the card.

I might have to end up buying another psu with better pci-e cables, as the 6+2 pin on this one doesn't quite fit in properly. So i think maybe thats it.

I'm going to try and mess around with the bios again, and get it working. If that doesn't work i don't know where to turn really.

A GeForce GTX 280 requires you to have a 550 Watt power supply unit at minimum if you use it in a high-end system. That power supply needs to have (in total accumulated) at least 40 Amps available on the 12 volts rails.

I reckon your PSU is inadequate. I couldn't find any official power requirements on the nvidia site but found this in a guru3d review.

e: And here is a review of your PSU (including video of it blowing up at loads over 450w)

Yeah, it must be the psu. I bought this thinking it was 500watt, as it was advertised. It's actually 400watt. I was also told a 430watt power supply would be enough for the graphics card.

So it looks like i'm going to have to get a new psu today.

Well, the OCZ CoreXStream comes in many prices for the 500watt version. I didn't find a 550watt version. I don't know if it's any good. I need to know for certain it would power up a nvidia gtx 280, and i also need to know if the 6+2 pci-e cable actually fits in properly into the card. I guess some of them cheap psus with 6+2 pin pcie cables dont actually fit in properly.

My gaming pc has an epsilon 1010watt psu. I dunno if epsilon is any good anymore though. The power supply in that pc has been running constantly for 5 years so i guess they make good psus.

I just found a used epsilon 800w psu for 52 pounds. I might go for one but i'm not up on what the best make of power supply there is. I have an old corsair psu in another system which won't power the nvidia card as it needs a 550 watt, so i cant take that one out.

Any suggestions?

IMO the psu should not be scrimped on. If something goes wrong with it then it has the potential to completely wreck other components. Personally I always pay the 'good brand' premium for peace of mind that my system is not going to blow up.

For £50 - £60 OCUK have very little in stock, the one they do have in stock at that budget that I would go for in your position is this one

But there is a Corsair Builder CX600 -

and an XFX Pro 550W Core -

Which you may pick up from somewhere that has stock. Just read some reviews and see which one you fancy.
