Motherboard or CPU issue?

I've just started building my first new rig in 12 years.
  • Gigabyte Aorus GA-Z270X-Gaming 7 motherboard
  • Intel 7700K
Unfortunately, it's not happy.
When I power up, the motherboard lights up the CPU LED, and then constantly toggles between the M_BIOS and B_BIOS LEDs every few seconds.

According to the manual, the CPU light means CPU is not functioning correctly. I've checked the CPU fan, which works properly, and I've tried re-seating the CPU - but no change.

No mention of the BIOS LEDs alternating, but my guess is that it's just a side effect of the CPU issue. (Main BIOS fails due to no CPU, fails over to backup BIOS, which also fails?)

My understanding is that it could be the motherboard that is faulty (e.g. bent pin) or the CPU. How do I know which component to RMA? Is it more likely to be the motherboard? Do you normally RMA both is this situation?

Any help gratefully received!

If you don't have another CPU or motherboard to test I'd just ask the retailer what to do, assuming they can test the parts themselves it's likely more cost efficient to send both back anyway.

The board has two bios switches.

One stops dual bios working

The other flips between main and backup bios.

See if that fixes things, also try clearing CMOS (there's a button for that too)

Please try the switch as Stulid has recommended, if you still get the issues rely here and I will arrange to collect the board and get it looked at ASAP for you.

I tried clearing the CMOS but unfortunately it didn't help.

I've just ordered a Gigabyte Gaming K5 mobo and Core i5 CPU for my son, so I thought I'd try those. Unfortunately the pins on the new Gaming 5 mobo don't look perfect: on close inspection a couple look slightly bent. I thought I'd try anyway...

Results:
Gaming 7 mobo + core i7 - original problem: CPU light comes on immediately and it doesn't boot.
Gaming 7 mobo + core i5 - same thing
Gaming 5 mobo + core i7 - same thing
Gaming 5 mobo + core i5 - same thing

I'm left feeling that it must be two dead motherboards - purely because it seems more probable than two dead CPUs.

Would it be possible to arrange collection?

Did you buy from OCUK, if its Under 14 days they should be able to straight swap it for you without having to go or you to go to Gigabyte .
Able to upload image shots of the socket ??

Of course, it's very strange to see you with two dead boards... e-mail [email protected] and reference the OCUK forums

I will get this looked into for you ASAP and have the boards back with you within a few days...

..and you've tried a different psu and all connectors are connected?

It turns out I wasn't connecting the 12V CPU cable! I feel so stupid. Thanks for the help.

Yes, very strange lol! Sorry to have been a time waster. I haven't actually checked the other mobo yet - it's pins do look a bit dodgy so I may need to return something after all. I'll test it over the weekend.

Thanks again for the the help guys.
