Got a day off. Was really looking forward to building, testing and overclocking my new system.

Unfortunately I have been scuppered. :(

Components:

MSI Z77 GD55
8GB Corsair DDR3 1600
I7-2700K
Phantek ph-tc14pe cooler
VTX3D 7970

Paired with an OCZ 700watt power supply and Coolermaster Stacker 832. Motherboard power LED lights up. Press it to post and the phantek fans spin gently as does the front and back case fan. The GPU fans flicker as does the PSU fan.

Also the front panel connector for the power LED is 3 pin when the corresponding mobo connector is only 2 pins!! This shouldnt affect powering on from the motherboard directly however.

Whats going wrong?? Please help I have my sad face on.....

Is the 8pin ATX near the CPU fitted?

ClearCMOS

Use one stick of RAM at a time in all slots, repeat for the other RAM.

Build it outside the case.

Remove the GFX card and use the onboard solution.

8pin was always connected! Tried with one stick of ram, outside the case and onboard GPU and still doesnt power up.

Just checked the PSU with my old mobo and that powers up fine after a 2 second delay from hitting the button (P35/C2D/4GB ram)

Hmmmmm....

I would clear CMOS completely and remove battery. I would then try with one stick of RAM in the furthest slot from the CPU. I would if you can try a different RAM stick to the ones in your sig.

Any way I could have botched my cpu installation? Made a weird noise when I pushed the cpu plate down on it. Well aligned and pins seem ok though.

Every PC I have built with these intel sockets have made a lovely crunching sound when its closed.

Faulty/not fitted RAM will cause the PC not to boot up.

But to have two bad sticks is hugely unlucky when tried individually.

I have this problem but with a different setup. It just died when I was browsing, and now it won't start. PSU clicks, I guessed that means a short. So after extensive testing I've narrowed it to the CPU atx 8pin. Whenever that's plugged in, it won't start. If I remove that and have only the 20pin mobo, it powers up (but obviously shows nothing, with no CPU.

It is NOT the PSU, that's been tested in another computer, as well as another cable, same with the ram.
IT IS something between the 8-pin port and the CPU, the actual pins on the CPU look healthy. No signs of damage.
So now.... Do I replace the mobo? :-( or could it be the CPU. Bah! Maybe it's still in warranty?
