if my soon to be purchased motherboard (Asus X99) has a 2 usb 3.0 header each saying it supports 2 ports. (20-1 pin).
but the motherboard manual doesn't show any package contents which split the single physical header into two usb ports.

what am i missing?

How do you get two ports out of a single header?
and
if i only needed 1 port would the cases front panel io usb 3.0 plug directly in this type of 20-1 aggregated port?
probably missing something really obvious here....but i always thought there was a 1-1 relationship between motherboard headers and case front panel io...but then my last build was 7+ years ago.

thanks

There are no extra package contents for USB 3.

Each of those headers supports two ports top and bottom of row (see above).

So if your case front panel has a 20 pin USB 3 connector lead, plug it in one of those headers. It will support one or two ports depending on how many there are on your case front or you can buy a back panel bracket with USB 3 ports and plug into those headers.

ah, so a 20-1 header is a 'dual channel' header, but you need a case front panel io which supports the 20-1 header....?
Is this the 'normal' for case front panel io for usb 3.0 and 2.0?

thanks

That's the way they do it.

If the case has got USB 3 ports on the front panel then it will have 20 pin connector. It will have standard USB 2 connectors. Mine has two USB 3 ports and four USB to ports on the case front panel.
