Motherboard with DDR tri-channel - Do you have to run it in tripple mode?

If you buy a motherboard that supports tri-channel DDR, can you put regular (cheaper) dual-channel DDR3 in?

Yes you can but I would not have thought with the way mem prices are at the moment that Tri channel would be that much more.

Well, looking at OC for example, they only sell one set of it, 12GB=£120!!!

It's not so much the motherboard that supports tri-channel, it's the CPU, off the top of my head you're only looking at lga1566 X58 + i9xx or their server equivalent chips for tri-channel.

8gb in dual channel mode is fine

x58 supports both tri(three sticks) and dual channel(two sticks)
