Hi guys,

First post so go easy on me. I have a new set up which i installed yesterday:

MSI 770-C45 AMD 770 AM3 DDR3 Support 8 channel Blu-ray Audio GB LAN

CPU - AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition 3.1GHz 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3

RAM - Corsair 2GB DDR3 1600MHz Memory Module Unbuffered x 2

Ok first question, is the 1600 memory ok, it is running fine but I read somewhere the 1600 isnt supported on the board? should one be in the black socket and one in the blue?

I downloaded MSI Overclocking Center to see how things were running but every time i open it it starts alarming, why is this? All fans are working below the alarm setting same for the CPU and system temp. This is worrying me, should it?

Using Fanspeed 4.39
Temp 1 - 29 degrees
Temp 2 - -128 degrees
Temp 3 - 46 degrees
Core 27 degrees

Do these temps seem ok, this while on net and instlling programs.

Thanks for the imput in advance this is the first motherboard bundle i have installed, so dont wanna wreak it, running WIN 7 64BIT.

download speedfan and see what that says.

if the mem isnt suppported by the board it may run at a slower speed

if you have four slots then put them both in the same color (to enable dual channel)

In most cases, the ram is in dual channel mode (faster) when the sticks are in 2 slots of the same colour. Occasionally a board will defy this convention (my previous Biostar AM2 board did). You can check for sure by referring to the memory section of your motherboard manual.
If the board supports slower DDR3 speeds than 1600, the RAM will just run at the slower speed, it will still work fine. Some Ram needs more than the default voltage to achieve it's maximum speeds. This can be set in the bios according to the settings on the RAM stick itself on the sticker. But RAM speeds make so little difference to performance that there's an argument for not even bothering & just leave it at defaults.
The temp 2 looks way too high but it is probably wrong, my board wrongly reports one of the temperatures too high. As said, core temp or speedfan are good programs for checking temperatures. The alarm might be sounding because one of the fans is running too slow. This could be just an error too.

Ok guys, thanks for the info, I changed the ratios in the bios for the memory and it is now showing 1600, so all good there. The temperatures for the core are sitting around 25 - 30 degrees, with the other sensors reading 30 - 35 degrees, thats under idling, the system heats up while gaming due mainly to my 8800GTS 640 which has alaways been a hot running card, 70 - 75 degrees under full gaming loads, nothing really new there.

Another question is the core unlocking, I have upgraded the bios and I am able to unlock the other 2 cores (I have turned this off again as I just wanted to test it). How much of a perfomance bost will unlocking give the 550, does it turn into a real beast? Should I buy a better fan than the stock if i intend to do it permenantly?

On another smaller side issue, when I upgraded the bios I lost my motherboard splash screen, can I get this back?

Thanks again for all your help.

the thing is with unlocking cores is that they have been locked beucase they didnt not pass amd's test.

it could turn out that your cpu is fine but if those cores are bad youll end up with an unstable chip
