Mothers VM Wireless problem

My mum used to have her desktop wired to her Virgin Media modem. She was having a problem with the internet and they had to reinstall it and moved the modem to the front of her house (her office is also on the ground floor but at the back of her terraced house).

Obviously having a wired connection wasn't going to be good idea so Virgin Media have her a USB dongle. Her problem is that for the dongle to actually get any signal she has to have it hanging on the wall close to the door on a 2m USB cable and it's just not very practicle.

My question is would a Network card be able to pick up the wireless far easier than the useless dongle? I would assume it would but just wanted any other ideas.

Cheers

The wireless on VM routers is infamous for its poor performance. An internal card could be even worse. It really depends on the size of the antennas and where you can position them.

Have you considered a pair of Powerline adapters? They'd more-or-less give her a wired connection.

VM have released a superhub 2 which gives better wireless range. Give them a ring and see if they'll upgrade the hub for free/for a good discount. It might take a few tries though.

My mum had a very similar problem with the wireless VM.

I tried to talk her into a wired connection but she didn't want the hassle of me lifting the carpets etc so homeplugs sorted it :)

As I say, worked perfectly for what I (/mum) needed.

It took longer to get them out of the box than it did to get them up and running. A touch of a button made them encrypted and she was connected at ~140mbps solid.

If I hadn't cabled up my house I'd use them myself :)
