Motion blur?

After 6 years of using a nice old Dell 19" CRT monitor, it started to become blurry and fuzzy for varying in lengths of time each time it was turned on, so I put this down to age and thought about buying a new monitor.

So, as I'm browsing through the list of monitors on OCUK I narrow it down to the following two LCD monitors:

Belinea 102035W 20.1"

and the

Dell Ultrasharp 2007WFP 20" Widescreen

After discussing with a friend of mine which would be the better one to get, he claimed it would be the Dell one due to all the extra inputs, so I went with his advice and brought the 2007WFP.

After waiting in all day for city link to deliver, I set off to work at around 5:15 after leaving a note on the door reading:

"City Link man, please deliver next door <-----" with an arrow pointing in the direction. After a couple of hours of hard work at work shifting a delivery, I came home, went next door and picked up my monitor.

After deboxing the monitor and reading the quick start poster thing, I set about setting it up. I plug in the DVI cable, plug in USB and then go to plug in the power cable and find I don't have one. So, that wasn't much of a problem as I'd use my old monitors power cable.

So I took my old Dell one off my desk, put the new Dell on in its place. After this the logical thing to do is to plug in the cables, so I did, then I turned on my computer, which for some reason took hours to load up, and seemed to be stuck on the whole Windows XP loading screen. I reset in hopes it was just a crazy thing. This time it starts up normally and when I get into windows I change the resolution to 1680x1050. I change my wallpaper to a widescreen version, and begin to explore the wonders of the new monitor.

For a few minutes everything seemed fine, but when moving windows around I couldn't quite see what the text was whilst I was moving the window, which I thought was odd. So I went to test a really "cool" game called Counter Strike: Source.

Whilst sitting still in the game everything is as clear and as sharp as a razor blade, but when turning around, I notice everything goes blurry, then when I stop everything is sharp again. After a while of playing I kind of got used to it, but it's still quite annoying being blurry.

After this little test, I decided to try the VGA a go. So I shut down computer, plugged in VGA and disconnected DVI, started up but it was exactly the same. I tried using the auto adjust option in the options but that didn't help.

After talking to my good friend again, trying to describe the problem, I couldn't quite figure it out. In the end I said it kinda looked like the gmod motion blur on minimal - which it does kind of.

So I was wondering if this is normal on LCD monitors, or is there some sort of hidden setting I must enable? Maybe even a little something odd that needs to be done.

I tried to make a video of it using phone and a normal camera, but both came out with very small and dodgy videos that were unclear anyway.

what your experiencing is common from when people move from crt monitors to tft. its to do with the slow response times of tft screens. every tft i have seen fails my basic test which is to have the windows display settings set to display window contents while dragging. then i drag a window with test and stuff in it ile an ocuk forum thread and see how clear it is when its in motion.

NO tft i have come across so far even comes close to my 21 inch dell crt.

texture blurring as you describe is common on TFT's and is just down to the way they operate. Having a low response time can help minimise this, but it is especially evident to people moving from a CRT to TFT for the first time. Give it a bit of time and you will get used to it i'm sure and forget it's there.

try decreasing the brightness, my 24" dell was set at 50 when i got it, far to bright, i found it gosting when i was brosing the net (scrolling pages) i i now have it set at 20 (which is still brighter than my 22" iiyama at full brightness) & its perfect. Try experimenting with it.

I'm sorry to hear about that mate. It must be very disappointing to get it and find it isnt what you expected. To be honest though I really cannot tell the difference, infact I would say it was better than my CRT, brighter and more vibrant.

My 24" DELL is fine, I have just moved from CRT and consider myself fussy about these type of things (Image quality, ghosting blurring etc). I was concerned regarding the ghosting I had heard so much about on TFT's. I haven't had a sniff of it to be honest. The factory defaults are very bright but I need to tinker with the settings to make it just perfect. I got it at 9.40 yesterday. It was set up 20 mins later and only stopped play this morning at 1am as I needed some sleep. I played BF2 to death. Oh I played HL2 in 1920x1200 and didn't see any ghosting either. CSs was good also, that was out of native res too at 1280x1024. Anyway I guess you don't wanna hear me banging on about how good mine is.

What resolution are you playing the actual game in? What video card do you have? do you have the latest drivers for it? Is there any kind of noise reduction filters being used on your video card or effects? Maybe the display is faulty? Hmmmmmmm...hope you get to the bottom of it mate.

I'm running in the optimum resolution of 1680x1050, I have a 7800GTX and I have drivers 84.43 updated a couple months back.

I think I'll try tinkering with the settings more, the Dell CD said to mess around with Pixel clock and Phase settings, which I did do and recieved no visible difference.

Not having an LCD monitor or TV before, I never knew what to expect. I was thinking they were exactly the same as CRT's only, thinner and less space.

If like you people say, and it's part of the way LCD's work I guess I'll just have to get used to it which is never hard for me.

Might help if you could go to a shop and look at display models of complete systems, or a friends house and have a go with theirs. Or take yours around to their house.

At least then you can decide if they have a lesser/greater blur effect than your new Dell. As you could have a faulty unit for all you know as nothing to compare it against.

Unfortunately you dont notice the HUGE difference between CRT and LCD until you go back to CRT. I was forced to recently when my LCD died on me. They are worlds apart.

I think Bane has a good point. Try and compare it to another TFT.
We have some at work which are pap.

Also SharkyPal, you might be right, could be the fact that I just got it and was amazed, maybe if I had my CRT running next to it I would see a significant difference. The ones at work ghost like mad. Also have a limited res at 1024x768, they are old-ish ones. We still use 22" CRT's at work.

I would urge you Daniee to get up close to some other TFT's for a mosey, as Bane pointed out you may have a faulty one and end up putting up with it.

Hope things get sorted for you mate
