Came down to my car (1995 Toyota Rav4) on saturday morning and tried starting it... as soon as the engine was turning over I could hear an obvious knocking coming from the engine bay. I open the bonnet and look inside and to my dismay I see an evil piece of plastic sticking out from the side of the Cam Shaft Pulley. With the engine running there's an obvious wobble on the pulley as well :( . Apparently this is a pretty common fault on old Ravs!!

I had the car recovered to a local garage today who said providing he can get the part shouldn't cost more than 250 Euros (Parts and labour). All in all not a bad price except this has come a week after the boiler in my rental property back in the UK packed in.

So... I have a 5 week old baby that is growing out of clothes faster than i can supply them... a boiler that more than likely needs replacing and now a car that needs repairing...

Is there anything else that can go wrong this week??????

Yes. You can get struck by lightning.

(seriously though, that sucks, can't you replace it yourself? You can probably pick up the parts for close to nothing at a breaker's yard).

I would do it myself, from what I can tell its a simple job...

Remove wheel and Arch liner.
Loosen belt tensioner and remove belt.
Remove Pulley and replace with new.

Only issue I could see there is removing the pulley (I believe they're tensioned to around 250 Nm and require a breaker bar or air gun to get them off, both of which I do not have :( )

If I could get the pulley off the other issue I have out here in Cyprus is getting hold of the parts. Breakers yards are few and far between, plus the language barrier can be a hindrance :(

Is it definitely the pulley that's at fault or could it be that there is something wrong with the tensioner that caused the pulley to fail?

Do you know anyone with an impact wrench? Even a good battery one would do well.

Yeah its definitely the pulley that's gone, when looking at it you can see bits of the internals sticking out the side where its broken down and come apart. :(

The car has already been recovered to a garage anyway as I need the car back ASAP as we have friends flying out and I'm supposed to be collecting them from the Airport on Wednesday.
