Steel toe cap leather boots 30 quid

I don't know if this is 100% true but I have heard steel toecaps are bad as if you were to crash the steel can cut your toes off. I prefer proper bike boots as when I had my only crash, and I hope it remains that, my boots saved my left ankle from more serious injury.

Depends on how much you value your body, convenience and cost, really to how you kit yourself out.
I personally have budgeted a lot more than that for myself. I have however had 2 accidents (1 minor and 1 medium) whereby i have seen the effects first hand.

Not far off it. Steel toecaps aren't designed for such accidents. They also don't protect/support the rest of your feet or ankles.

I know it gets said a million times, but I saw a guy on a street triple yesterday wearing trainers. I mean really! I wore my bike boots all day today. Buy decent not stupid boots and they look fine to wear about.

Anyway yes. Proper boots have ankle support. Ankles are better whole and not reconstructed from lots of shattered bits of bone and some blutac.

Bike footwear doesnt have to be boots, its 2013 not 1975. Granted if your going out for a hoon on sportsbike you would want boots or greenlaning. But for everyday popping down the shops or if your just out for a bimble then Doc Martins/jacket/Gloves and Helmet is all you need really. I know people who put on full gear to go 2 miles, where if it was me its Doc martins/ leather jacket/gloves and im off.

What happened in 1975?

I'm sure you can get t-boned on an official designated 'bimble' or trip to the shops.

This seems to imply a nice spread over all sorts of roads. And that's somewhere with lots of nice A roads to die on!

Anyway this is a no-win discussion, so please just focus on telling me what happened in 1975! I wasn't born then so don't remember.

Just like most accidents happen in the home, most traffic accidents happen on routine trips because the brain is less alert in familiar surroundings.

Docs only offer superficial protection, much like boots did in errm 1975.. No anti-hyper extension joints or any such tech to reduce the chance/severity of injury.

Confucius says (I always wanted to say that, good old charlie chan :D) "By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest."

I learnt about protection from the 3rd option and two decades of agro. SPG, when you've almost lost the use of your legs you come tell me about short trips not being worth kitting up for.

The look of relief on the ambulance crews faces when they saw I was proper kitted up said it all to me, They even told me that they dread going to an RTA with a bike involved as it's usually messy. They praised me for being kitted up well about 3 times in all.

As for Boots an old bike racer told me if you only wear one thing wear decent bike boots, Your ankle bone is worn down if you come off to such an extent that they have to fuse your foot & leg together permanently, It is one of the few bones/areas on the body they cannot fix.

As for not wearing kit on a local short trip my accident happened on what I cal my Ring lap which is a route I take just about every time I go out & I was probably just a few miles from home. Mid day Sunday, Bright day, 2 week old Lumi vest on only doing 35mph. **** still pulled out on me.
I hit him in the drivers wing, over the bars onto the bonnet & then spat across the road. I was on the deck for maybe 30 minutes or so recovering but walked myself into the ambulance with the help of the ambulance crew. Plenty of marks here & there but Nowt broken & I was out of hospital & home a couple of hours later.

In my opinion anybody that doesn't wear proper kit is an Idiot.

As said, buy a pair of decent boots, not just for sliding along but even if you fall over at a set of lights and the footpeg decides it wants to make an entrance into your ankle then a decent set of boots will prevent this.

Decent gloves, decent boots, and preferably gear that zips together as it can and will ride up your back if you're sliding on your arse and wear away your vertebrae

Worst advice ever.

OP, i beg you to ignore this post.

Hell, I’m only on a 125cc scooter but I never go out with being fully geared up regardless of the journey length.

Seriously, if you don’t have masses of money try on some Weise gear. It pretty much all gets good reviews in the magazines and from real world bikers too. Then grab yourself a 4 or 5 star shark rated lid that fits you correctly (get them to measure your head in there). Add a decent set of boots (with full ankle protection) and you’re sorted.

Apart from the gear I’ve bought I also asked around in the place I used to work at a while back now. A couple of guys were more than happy to donate some unused gear they had to someone new to the fold - all I did was ask.

As a side note, I get plenty of nods from bikers even here in London on my crappy scooter, likely because they can see I'm not some chav or pizza oik lol.

For someone that has talked the talk about good defensive riding, been on more than one BikeSafe course, not too mention recommending courses to others, I find your attitude here strange to say the least.

So err...what did the Police that ran the courses think of your Doc Martin boots and jeans?

OK so when you say "doc martins is all you need" that's because you don't mind getting injured, not because they offer any actual decent protection. Perhaps you should caveat that is because you like taking undue risks. Or, you know, just revert to the 'yay free choice' argument later on only if people are sensible enough to criticise. In other places the sheep would all agree and OP would think normal footwear is fine. When you're actually promoting unnecessary risk taking as they don't.

Man alive. Hey kids, a dressing gown is all you need anyway.*

*it's my choice (now everybody is moaning at me) yaay risk taking. Yay crushed velvet. Yay stupid advice.
Same thing.
