You know what, now its official, I am actually very happy that McLaren have done this.

A driver that has won an F1 feeder series has been rewarded with a race seat in a decent team, and at the expense of a paid driver. This is so rare now a days that I doth my cap to McLaren for having the guts to buck the trend and not just look at money.

God I hope Magnussen doesn't screw up, lol.

Perez wasn't paying for his seat. However, he did come with the potential of having Carlos Slim backing in the future. McLaren obviously decided that wasn't worth the wait given Perez's performances.

The sudden cancellation of their new title sponsor announcement suggests that he may soon have been? I doubt we will ever know the full story.

Really looking forward to see how magnussen gets on, if mclaren can produce something for them to drive.

It is good isn't it. Just need to get rid of that Venezuelan paid driver as well. :)

Cheers for the update Glaucus.

Agreed. This, getting Honda onboard for 2015 and signing two key players from Red Bull's technical team definitely shows some strong ambition and a little less of the cautious McLaren we've seen for the past few years. I think if they were going to do this at all, it absolutely had to be now, rather than giving Pérez another year before making the switch.

Have there been any updates on their plans for Vandoorne for 2014?

Several others too. Back when manufacturers had a more significant involvement, only Nakajima was a pay driver (around 2008).

He was at the GP2 testing in Abu Dhabi so I think he'll head to that series for at least one year.

Would be nice. He's living up to his 'complete dick' reputation still, by ****ging off Williams to the press before he's even left.

Sadly I think due to his ill gotten millions in sponsorship Lotus and Sauber would welcome him with open arms.

I would say Perez trumps Maldonado now that he's on the market.

Definitely, just wondering though about his financial backing, do you think he could have lost the backing from Telmex and is one of the reasons he won't be driving for McLaren (and that's why McLaren are getting a new sponsor)?

Oh god Hulk has just gone down in my view.
No top race bitting at the bit would have that view. They would go in convinced they could win.

Nico Hulkenberg has admitted the reason he turned down the chance to race for Lotus in the last two grands prix of the season was because of concerns about how being beaten by Romain Grosjean might damage his reputation.

Yeah it does make him look like he's not got enough confidence in himself. I can see his point though, different car which he doesn't know and let's be honest, Romain is doing a stellar job at the moment.

He's damned if he does (take the drive) and damned if he doesn't... but yes you could definitely argue that it doesn't make him sound too confident in his own abilities..

Jumping into another car wouldn't be easy for him. He's made the right choice IMO.

Just look at Fisichella jumping from Force India to Ferrari!!

Of couurse it wouldnt be easy, but he has nothing to lose. Everyone knows how hard it is.
I cant see him going there next year now, which means hes basically given up the best available seat on the grid.
It was a win win opotunity. Nothing to lose, everything to gain.

Sounds more like his manager(s) talking. It's the sensible decision, especially seeing as though his future is still not certain, could well be he might need to try keep his Sauber seat.

After losing his seat at Williams to Maldonado ad his bags of cash Hulkenberg probably has more reason than most to be cautious.
