What is a delta wing?

Where have you been?!

http://www.deltawingracing.com

Its a prototype race car that was originally proposed as an option for the new IndyCar chassis. It wasn't chosen for that, but the ACO offered it the garage 56 spot at this years Le Mans. It made it until about the 8th hour or something before being wiped out by one of the Toyota's.

Its now been given the green light to run as a classified car in the ALMS in 2014, and looks to be competing in some other ALMS races until then, including Petit Le Mans which is on now where its running 4th.

Its a concept around efficiency. It uses ground effect not wings to generate downforce, so has far less drag. Its got 75% of its weight over the rear wheels meaning the front wheels are really narrow helping the Aero designs. Its got half the power of other P2 cars with a 300bhp version of the 1.6 Nissan Juke engine and only weighs 500kg. They plan to have half the fuel consumption of the P2s, and use half the tyres, and are hitting those targets.

Its a fantastic demonstration of efficiency and design.

It's a brilliant example of what can be done when you throw all the rule books out the window and start with a clean sheet.

I had a horrible feeling that after its Le Mans crash it would be locked away and forgotten about, which would be such a shame as it quite literally has the potential to change how we think about motor racing. Thankfully the ALMS has seen its potential and pushed to get it racing again.

I love how when it was first unveiled as a potential IndyCar design, it was met with derision about how it would never get around corners with that pointy front end. As soon as it gets thrown at GT racing (with very few serious changes to the chassis and layout I might add!) it gets touted as the greatest thing since beer was invented.

Funny how these things work out.

;)

I've loved it since day one :). Those first bonkers looking pictures in Autosport that made the Dallara IndyCar concept (which was fairly radical in its own right) look dull :D

I didn't think it would ever exist though, as I didn't think anyone would be brave enough to give it the go ahead.

There seemed to be a lot of people getting caught out by small rule breaks. I imagine BMW have fired their air hose guy, some people got caught out with safety car rules and a number of people for done for speeding in the pit lane.

Hey guys, as part of my degree, I've yet again been tasked with carrying out a survey to do with my dissertation title of "A look at the transference of carbon fibre technologies between the aerospace and motorsport industries, and what is the future?"

So I have written a pilot survey to first gain a basic understanding of public opinions and knowledge on the usage of carbon fibre in motorsport, and also get some feedback on the wording and structure of the survey for when I create the main one I'll be sending out to targeted audiences.

Anyway, as it's only a pilot survey, I'm not after hundreds of responses (hence why I'm posting this in here rather than it's own thread) but if even a few of you could complete it and offer some tips at the end, that would be amazing.

It's only 9 questions long so shouldn't take any longer than a couple of minutes.

Here's the link to the survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NDWSWHS

As a side note, I'll be posting up a thread about the results of a survey I carried out earlier in the year about the public's opinion on aerodynamics in formula 1. I had over 330 responses to that one and some very interesting results and comments from a wide variety of people so I thought you guys might be interested.

Anyway, in short, if you could complete my survey, I'll be hugely grateful. :)

Thanks!
