Anyone got any tips for shooting motorsport (specifically outdoor karts)...? I own a 350D with a 28-200 Sigma, and looking for what mode I should be using for quick focusing etc.

Cheers,

David

Ideally you want to use a panning technique. This involves using a slower shutter speed (e.g. 1/400th or 1.250th) and panning the car with the camera (use shutter priority mode). You will need to set the camera on continuous focus mode - I dont know what its called on Canon cameras. You may have to experiment with different shutter speeds to see what works best.

Outdoor karts will be interesting, Ive never shot them before. Good luck.

If you have any more questions, please ask.

Hi - I covered a few karting events last year.

Some tips
Use a slow shutter and panning technique to capture speed, Shutter speed 1/250 and slower.
Try different angles to improve the impact of the photo.
Try shooting low to the ground for different perspective.

Use AI Focus on Tv Mode, this will give you constant focus tracking and control over the shutter speed.

Some sample photos - more here

Still love those images!!

But yes, slow that shutter speed down, have the camera on AI focus and just keep shooting!

Out of interest SDK^, where did you go to shoot these photo's? How do you go about getting access to Karting events? Written permission or can you just go along.

As well as going to track Motorsport this year I'd also be interested in going to places like Karting circuits and seeing what I can get out of it.

They were taken at Rye House Karting Circuit
My girl friends uncle and his son race karts, they invited me down for the weekend to take photos of them. I cleared it with the circuit owner and was free to roam around the circuit, just to keep behind the tyre barrier. With a 100-400mm lens I didn't need to get that close anyway.
