These have just been installed on a section of the M1 I use most days, J25-28

I cannot find any definite answer as to whether they are just used to enforce the reduced speed limits or whether they are also used for the 70mph limit

anyone know ?

the ones on the gantry that were put there when they widened it to 4 lanes ?

I think it's similar to the system deployed on the m42, and variable depending on traffic conditions.

There's some on the M42, I thought I got caught once but clearly didn't. I had no idea they were there though, cheeky beggars.

Here's some info I found on the M42 ones which is signposted as "Active Lane Management" or something along those lines :o

[COLOR=00000FF]This is a gantry in the variable speed limit section of the M42 between the M40 and M6. There is a camera mounted above each lane and they work in the same way as a regular Gatso. Only twelve gantries are fitted with cameras as the rest just have dummy road markings. As the cameras are hidden behind the speed limit displays its easier the look at the section of gantry over the opposite side of the road as the gantries fitted with cameras have them in both directions. The number of drivers who flout the 50mph limit at the m25/m3 junction, where average cameras are is amazing.

I was bang on 50 (around 55ish on the speedo) and a black range rover shot past me

typical.....

Could you not just drop a mail to the highway agency ? Might be worth a punt if you can't find it out on the web

Whats it going to say?

"Hi, I was just wondering wether I have to stick to the speed limit on the M1 only when its reduced, or do I also have to adhere to the 70 limit too?"

If we're on about the cameras on the gantrys there were put there when they finished the widening to 4 lanes then you don't.

I've driven down the M1 at 80 + and not got anything. They're not enforcing the 70 limit currently.

I believe they went active last week.

Can't speak for those but I can tell you 100% that the same type of cameras on the M6, M42 and M25 only work when the signs are lit. When they are lit they can enforce the 70 limit, a national symbol will be displayed.

Do Average Speed Cameras log ACTUAL speed?

Does anyone know whether Average Speed Cameras EXCLUSIVELY measure average speed or do they also measure instantaneous speed - i.e. if you pass one at more than 50mph or 40mph as applicable but average less than 50 or 40 between cameras, is this registered?

I have noticed that many people don't slow down until after they have passed the first camera and/or speed up before passing the last one and wondered why

thast what I thought and am ok with that, its just with no signs lit at all you forget they are there

only average, they are not capable of measuring single point speed

That's my understanding of it too;

I wouldn't worry Rotty unless the gantry is lit up.
