Mount SCSI Drive in Ubuntu

Hello.

You'll have to bare with me with this problem, I'm a complete n00b when it comes to Linux. But this might be the only way to save my data.

Woke up this morning and couldn't boot into Windows, kept saying it was unable to read from the disc. So I tried a Ubuntu LiveCD tonight, but the Windows drive was showing up as an SCSI drive (whatever that is). So I installed Ubuntu onto a spare hard drive but it's still showing up as an SCSI drive.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to mount this hard drive?

Do you use RAID? Or have a RAID controller present?

Edit:
The Gigabyte DS3 has a RAID controller.

This is probably what is showing up as a SCSI drive.

If you use RAID on this device, good luck getting Linux to mount it.

If you don't, then there is no point trying to mount the SCSI device, and the real problem is that Linux - like Windows - can't see your SATA/PATA drive. Was it Windows, or your BIOS that said "unable to read from the disc"?

I haven't got RAID setup. I have another hard drive (the exact same drive as the one Windows is installed on) and I can mount that easy enough in Ubuntu by going to Place and selecting the drive.

But for some reason the Windows drive is showing as an SCSI drive.

What makes you sure that it's the windows drive showing as a SCSI drive? Volume label?

Even if you aren't using it, the RAID device will likely show itself as a SCSI drive.

Could it be the drive is knackered and thats its not auto mounting it?

Which ubuntu did you try?

you need to establish if you can see the drive, then we'll look at mounting it.

Hi, thanks for the replies.

It was the latest release Ubuntu 8.10.

I realised I could just install Vista onto the hard drive instead of Ubuntu to try and get it working. The drive is showing up in device manager, but not my comptuer. And disk management fails to load with the drive attached.

So I think it's goodbye to my data and RMA time.

Theres software out there to get back data from "dead" hard drives, I've used "get back data for ntfs" before but it did appear in my computer, my hdd lost its file table it would have appeared at the time, i got my data off and reformatted it and it worked.

Cheers for the help. Went through the RMA process with Western Digital and they said I need to replace it. So getting a new one sent out now.
