so i just bought a wireless xbox controller and the wireless reciever to play games like dark souls, DMC and so on

i dont really want to plug in the reciever and then unplug it when im done everytime i want to use the controller and i dont really want it plugged in all the time either so i had an idea and i would like to know from you guys if you think its possible

i have an unused USB 2.0 header on my motherboard so would it be possible to rewire the reciever so it can connect and be powered from the header? i would mount the reciever in one of my optical bays because its mesh so it wouldnt block the signal... the idea being whenever i want to use the controller i can just pick it up and turn it on the same way i would with an actual xbox 360 console
anyone think this is possible?

it's just a usb device so no reason why you couldn't rewire it. Personally i wouldnt worry about it being plugged in all the time. I'd probably just plug it in to an unused usb socket at the back of the pc and feed that back in internally and stick the receiver somewhere in side the PC. it's RF so it doesnt need to have direct line of sight with the joypads - it'll work just about anywhere so no need to mount it in a drive bay.

thanks for the advice :)
i was thinking to stick it in the drive bay so if it ever lost sync to the controller for whatever reason i can just pop drive bay cover off so i dont have to take my PC apart to get at it

i think im going to try and rewire it to connect it to the header because i have a ton of USB devices that are connected to my PC most of the time... if i rewire it to connect to the header will i still be able to install the drivers as normal?

When I did this with my wireless headphone received, I used a USB Header to USB 2 adapter:

Whatever you do make sure it is easily changable. They have a nasty habit of blowing the internal fuse and stopping working.... so make sure you can swap it out for another if it happens.
