I'm looking at getting a 2nd hand bike off eBay/Gumtree for canal rides and maybe trails.

I did own a (expensive) mountain bike a few years ago but used it 4 or 5 times before selling it before it dropped too much value, so thinking budget this time as it wont get much use.

Are there any recommended makes / models in this 2nd hand price range?
Looking on eBay, the following are in that price range. Some need repair or are just a few years old and paintwork is a bit done in. The latter does not bother me, only if I have to spend time and money repairing it

Giant
GT
Marin
Carrera
Apollo
Raleigh

I have seen a few Specialized bikes too (Hard Rock) model for £130 and £150

Where are you based?

Ah was going to say I've got a carreara (I think) hybrid that could do with a more loving home. Needs some tlc but if you for some reason need to head down to Nottingham you are welcome to take it.

Too kind and I am in Nottingham this weekend (staying on Station street) but travel by train. Ideally dont want to do much repairing brakes/gears/shocks but replacing wheels and innertubes shouldnt cost the earth.
Any bike I get will be for canal path riding at first and should get a fair bit of use - I need to trim down after xmas as usual!

Ah nice, staying at juries Inn?

It'd be looking at new tires, pads and maybe chain, some nice oil may do they trick tbh. I got mine pretty much for canal path riding. I used to live on station Street so right next to the canal!

Yep, Jurys :)

Id probably take it for service at Evans, presuming its not going to be hundreds.
Do you have any pics please? (Mail in trust)

Birthday party on the fri and restaurant & chill sat :)

Cheers. Might end up getting a mountain bike rather than a hybrid in case i start doing proper trails again. Maybe Hybrids can cope with trails though, guess they will be able to

Nice, where you eating?

Yeah a hybrid won't do too great in trails.

Spend a bit extra on tyres such as Schwalbe Marathon Tour Plus because of potential punctures.
Over the years I have collected the majority of my punctures on canal towpaths because 1) Nature & 2) Idiots smashing bottles.
I've also got puncture resistant inner tubes.

~£30 per tire (plus inner tubes) on a bike thats £100-£150? Wouldnt it almost make sense to just get a new bike. I suppose if they guarantee to never get get a punchure

I've had 6 bikes and the first thing I do is put decent tyres on.
Even if you bought a £1000 bike I'd be suggesting the same thing (unless it comes with similar tyres) but perhaps I've just been unfortunate where I live.
nearly all my punctures have happened in a radius of around 1.5 mile around the Bet365 Stadium where football fans tend to walk.
