Mountain Bike (£150 budget)

Hi,

I went on a bike hike yesterday (rented a bike) and it was a lot of fun, and we are planning to do this thing frequently. So I said instead of renting a bike everytime, I might as well buy one.

So I am looking for a bike in the range of £150.

Cannot really afford more at the moment (unless it's just a little bit more :p) and I want to just have fun, nothing professional.

If I start enjoying it and using it everyday, then in the future I will definitely buy a better one!

Unfortunately I have no idea where to start looking or what's bad and what's good!

So any help is appreciated!

Thanks

Sorry for the noob question...

but how are the £100 bikes from sportsdirect?

Something like this:
http://www.sportsdirect.com/muddyfox-ripper-mountain-bike-mens-932024?colcode=93202430
or this:
http://www.sportsdirect.com/muddyfox-anarchy100-mountain-bike-932010?colcode=93201052

I assume not that good?

Also, I will be using it on concrete (tarmac mostly) with some offroading... and our roads aren't the best with potholes and such, so not sure if I need a road bike or mountain bike!

Regarding the second hand, I live in Malta so unfortunately we dont have a good second hand market here, and most people who sell second hand don't deliver to Malta!

Also, regarding frame size... I am 170cm tall so don't know what size I should be looking for (18, 20 or 22 inch)

They'll be dire, in a perfect world you want a hybrid which gives you a more rugged and relaxed riding position compared to a road bike but can still handle some light off roading.

I reckon you'll pick up a decent second hand Specialized Hardrock Sport for £150' I own one my self and they're decent bikes :)

Btw you simply can't get anything new that's going to be decent for under £300 so don't waste your money.

The Sports Direct thing's are what I'd call a BSO (Bicycle Shaped Object).

It's going to be second hand to be honest. Keep an eye out on Gumtree or ebay or could try the forums over at retrobike for something if you don't mind a much older bike.
