Mountain Bike Frame Sizing Question

To me, very important... but it's a very vague question without any context.
Feels like you're not really asking the right question here...

What's the actual question / what bikes are you comparing to one another?

I am choosing a new mountain bike. I have seen that the front suspension bikes mean that the top tube is relatively high off the ground, so for a given frame size, you might not have that much standover height. I was wondering whether it was the done thing to sacrifice a bit of standover height on these newer bikes. However, I think in general I would prefer at least 2 inches standover height and I think I'll regret anything less than that.

Did you choose one? I find that most modern bikes keep the top tube swept low enough, the seat tube height, top tube length (well the reach at least, so 'effective' top tube length) and head angle are more important to me.

I bought a 2015 Giant Talon 1 in the end:

It's not bad, perhaps not my perfect bike but I was very keen to get the bike and had looked around most of my local bikeshops. I really liked the 2015 Cube range for value, but I found their rear chainstays were too wide, so clipped my heels very slightly when pedalling, so that was a no.
