Mountain Biking

There's a great deal on a marzocchi z2 rail but it can only max out at 150mm travel.

The Vitus Escarpe was likely a wiser purchase for a cheap upgrade. A fork for a sommet is gonna cost a bomb.

The nukeproof mega at £1499 is a good deal on crc right now too.

The base model 2020 Sommet only came with 160mm forks anyway so i think i can make do with 150mm forks for now, i managed to pickup another set of Recon 150mm's for £130 brand new so they will go on it for now, im going to save up and go balls out on a set of forks at Christmas for it.

Anyway it showed up today, this thing is beautiful.

I was getting pain in my hands that would take me 1-2 days to fully recover from after riding so ordered some GA3 grips.

They feel natural to hold and 0 discomfort after a quick 20 miles :D

I tried them as well but didn't get on with them. Found they force your hand in a specific position and don't allow different varying grips.
Going to 35mm grips fixed all my wrist aches.

Built my first wheel today, what a mission that was :( spent 4 hours ******* around with it getting it true then it would be like an egg, get the egg out then it was out of true, ended up loosening off every nipple and starting again and on 2nd attempt it clicked and had it true, round and tensioned in 20 minutes. :D

Now i feel compfortable to order parts for the front wheel and do that one instead of buying an already built one.

I was in Halfords today looking at Mountain bikes as I was considering buying a VooDoo Bizango. I was hoping to try out a medium but they only had a large in stock. I'm 5"9 so broadly between large and medium sizes.

Having sat on the large it felt reasonablly comfortable and I had plenty of standover clearance. Though they didn't have a Bizango in Medium I tried another Voodoo bike (Braag or Horde IIRC) in Medium as I assumed the sizing/geometry would be similar across the range.

I'm still a bit unsure as the handlebars felt a bit low on the Medium with the seat adjusted correctly whereas on the Large I'd say they were marginally higher than I'd want them to be. Having said that it looked like on the large size it would be easy to take out a couple of spacers in the stem to drop them to what should be the perfect height so I'm erring towards going with the Large size. The sales guy in the store recommended that I'd be better with the large bike as well though most of the guides on the Halfords site recommend Medium for my height?

Height (Inch)Height (cm)Frame Size
5' 5" - 5' 9"165 - 175S (16")
5' 8" - 5' 11"172 - 180M (18")
5' 10" - 6' 1"178 - 185L (19")
6' 0" - 6' 4"183 - 193XL (20"

What's the general consensus in Mountain Biking terms when you're between two sizes of bike? Is it better to size up or size down? I've searched online but there seem to be mixed opinions on the topic!

Have any of you guys been in a similar quandry?

Depends how you like your bike to feel. Smaller bikes are easier to throw around but larger ones might feel more planted.

What kind of riding do you expect to do? Handlebar heights are easily changed with larger rise handlebars or spacers.

Partly for Commuting to work and cyling though my locals woods on mostly level-ish gravel and dirt forest walks. Nothing too hardcore in terms of jumps or super technical trails.

My current bike is a Medium (17.5" IIRC) Specialized Rockhopper but I found I needed to fit riser bars to get comfortable on it as the handlebars were too low (and left me feeling too hunched over) with the saddle adjusted for my height. Presumably with me being at the top of the height rangle for that size. So I'm wondering if the larger size would make more sense given my past experience and offer a more comfortable upright position without the need to consider riser bars. Annoyingly my local Halfords don't seem to offer test rides outside though the Large size felt OK pedalling around the store.

I guess realistically the answer is probably to wait until a store has both Large and Medium sizes in stock to try them next to each other. Or possibly look at another bike where I'm not so wedged exactly between size brackets! Frustratingly a lot of Mountain Bike manufacturers seem to have a similar sizing brackets (ie. Medium (~5"6-5"9) and Large (~5"9 to 6"0) ) so at 5"9 I'm often between sizes with the medium feeling too small and the large feeling slightly big.

I so want to learn how to do my own as well. Any guides you read that were useful?

Yeah, spotted that on hotukdeals the other day. Cracking price for the spec but as I often use it for commuting I’m pretty keen on sticking with a 29” wheel. I’ve never tried a 27.5 though.

depends on the bike and whether you have short legs or torso for your height etc so no one can really tell you.

I'm 6"3 and went with a bike recommended for 5’10” – 6’2″ rather than have a frame for 6’2″ – 6’6″

I had a bike that felt too big in the past and I hated it, rather a bike that's a tad too small personally.
