Mounting TV on Plasterboard Walls

From someone who really has very little idea about this..

Generally, how strong is plasterboard? In my head it would just crack and give up under any weight hanging off it?

Is that not the case?

I mounted my 42" on a plasterboard wall. Used what looked like normal wall plastic plugs but these expanded as the screw went through. Works fine. 8 large screws spreading the weight over the board. LG 42UB820V 11.5kg
