mounting tv to single wall stud

Hi

Have a samsung u360ru7100k that i want to wall mount on a stud wall.

spec says it weighs just under 14kg.

i want to mount it in the corner of my room so have got a full motion wall mount.

Where it is being positioned it will be mounted to the first stud in the wall, will a single stud take the weight or would it be worth putting a piece of wood between 2 studs and mounting to that?

Im leaning towards a piece of wood between 2 studs just for extra security.

If you were leaving the TV in a static position I'd be happy with the one stud fixing, however if you intend to move the TV regularly I'd put the additional timber in as the load on the mount really needs to be evenly spread amongst its mounting points.

it will not be moved and will not be far out from the wall. It will just be angled towards my desk and not moved again.

i think i will just put a piece of timber in to be safe.

Take a look at 'Grip-It TV Bracket Plasterboard Fixing Kit'.

Ive used it before when I could only fix to plasterboard and it did the job well.

I've got a 42" plasma TV (23Kg) that is only mounted to the plasterboard using the equivalent to Grip-It type fixings. It's been there a long time and shows no signs of going anywhere.

I’m a carpenter by trade and I’ve mounted loads of tvs in plasterboard without hitting any studs, it’s absolutely fine as long as you use the appropriate fixing for the job, 14kg isn’t that bad to be honest so even plastic type rawl plugs for plasterboard would be enough, screwfix sell some, there grey and I believe made by fisher fixings, if your really worried use the metal ones as they open rather large behind the wall.

if possible add a timber in the wall you won’t get stronger than that but I wouldn’t go cutting a finished wall up for the sake of it tho!

Well ended up testing it on 1 stud and it took my weight with no problem so put it up.

It doesnt look it but its 50", just need to hide the cables now.
