i think he means black as in a black suite also i my mum and dad keep all the curtains in our house closed just before we go a funeral its ment to be a sign of respect or somthing

The poppy is a sign of "rememberance" not mourning.

A black armband would be a sign of "public" mourning.

As for personal mourning there is no "code/symbolism" IMO.
