Mouse and laptops

I have two laptops both with xp sp3 installed. I cant seem to get a normal mouse to work when i plug it into the USB. Any ideas why they dont work?

Tested mouse and USB, all is working as it should.

There are no option in bios as far as i can see. There is the 'plug in and play' which is set to 'yes'

There is a ! against 'other devices' IEEE 1394 controller, but googling it doesnt really seem to help.

This is a normal PS mouse connected via a usb dongle.

Maybe if i reinstall xp with the mouse plugged in?

Got native USB mouse and it works fine.

Marvilious. Now i can play Baldurs gate.
