Mouse freezing

I have a system based on a Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H motherboard with a HIS HD 7850 IceQ X 2048MB GDDR5 graphics card, in to which I have a SteelSeries Sensei Raw mouse plugged in to one of the rear USB3 ports. The issue I'm seeing is that the mouse freezes whenever a graphically intensive application starts up - specifically Minecraft, YouTube, etc.

This mouse works without issue in other computers, and when plugged in to a front USB(2?) ports on this particular computer. We've tried another Sensei Raw mouse and that exhibits exactly the same behaviour when plugged in to a rear port on this system. We've also tried a different brand of mouse plugged in to the rear USB ports, and this worked without any issue. So the key combination here seems to be the Sensei Raw plugged in to a rear USB3 port on the Gigabyte board.

So far I've tried updating the motherboard BIOS (to version 16) and installed the latest VIA USB 3.0 and Intel USB 3.0 drivers, but no joy. I've also applied the latest firmware to the mouse, and installed the latest drivers. If anything the problem seems worse after all this, and now the keyboard freezes too.

I think the signs point to an issue with the motherboard (recent BIOS updates reference "improved mouse compatibility") but any other ideas would be appreciated.
