Just looking for advice on a mouse mat. I've never used or even experienced what a modern gaming mat is like.
Last time I used one daily was the small mouse mat's from late 90's probably still present in your office or a freebie from some insurance company. And I hated these, they were awful, the mouse stuck to them so in the end the mat moved around instead of the cursor. And when laser mice first came out they didn't work that well due to the poor texture surface.

Logitech is hopefully replacing my mouse and I thought this might be the chance to get a modern mouse matt. But what should I expect?

I know if I got I would be looking for a medium size and solid black, so no design on it like the Roccat sense. I would love a sleek slab of super smooth glass, or perspex like material but guessing these aren't practicle :P

So yeah....suggestions, what should I expect? I know I am not 100% sold on the idea yet as I feel my desk is sufficient enough. :P

- A mouse mat provides a surface that is designed for a mouse to track perfectly on.

- It will have no small imperfections that will interfere with tracking. (a desk probably will, which will cause jitter)

- It has varying friction, increasing or decresing glide and stopping control. (any mouse mat has WAY less friction than a table for example)

Those are the main reasons I can think of for getting one. As for reccomendations, my Artisan Kai.g3 is the best I've ever used (google it), although they are not easy to come by (Japanese company) the website has been down for a month and they have a new one which is only in Japanese. Maybe look at a steelseries QcK+, Puretrack Talent or a Razer one.

I can understand not being sure about mouse mats if you've only used cheap nasty ones that are probably worse than a table. :p

I have a Razer eXactmat which has two different finishes, one on each side. One is smooth for speed (apparently) and the other is a little rougher for precision.
The movement is very smooth but it is quite noisy as it's a metal mat.

I'd very much like a rigid mousemat, maybe a metal one. Not just for the desk, but so I can balance it on the armrest of my sofa and use the mouse on there... :D They seem to cost way too much for whwat they are though, can't find one for under £10 anywhere! In fact, a few months ago I ordered one from OCUK, and despite the fact that it was listed in the "Hard Mats" category it wasn't rigid at all when I got it! I mean I know I'm not the most attractive guy but I expected a little bit of rigidity after holding it and stroking it for 20' before deciding to send it back....

Cheers, guys.

other thing is my desk always ends up messy and with mugs/glasses always placed dangeriously near my mouse. Boogie XL seems to be a good shout.

One thing I find is that grime can build up quite a bit from the desk (between the laminent fake grooves of the wood and on the mouse pad) making the thing feel quite sticky to move around.
Then the logitech developed a fault of the cursor acting like it was moving through a thick sludge and it wasn't a pleasant experience.

I have a quality logitech mouse (MX revolution) It works on my wooden desk without a mat perfectly fine. Never bothered with a mat. Not needed at all and looks horrible IMO. I prefer the look of a clean simple sleek desk... rather than a 14 quid mat splattered over it.

Don't bother with a mat. Stick to your desk. If you have a cheapo mouse... then a mat would have course help. If the desk is good quality, then it's fine.

a mouse mat is a must. But i never use cloth ones i just dont like them

i have a roccat sota can be had for like £15 and is a great mat not to big and not to small and hard surface

for the price mats cost i would have to stress that you buy one even if cheapest one you find.
