Hey all,

Looking to add pinky and better thumb rests onto my mouse. There are other mice out there that have these features as standard but I'm not a fan of the rest of the mouse and the finger rests are not enough of a draw alone.

so the mouse (mice) in question are the g500 and g400. The old 400 is the test mouse that will be the prototype for the final mod on the 500. Basicly I want to add a pinky rest on the right and a better/larger (more forward and left) thumb rest on the left.

as these parts exist for other mice (e.g. R.A.T 9), was wondering if taking these and modding to fit the g400 would work and the best way to make it usable and comfortable. As the rests have screw holes for mounting on the RAT mouse, could use these to rivet or screw to the shell of the g400. then maybe plastic weld or glue for proper fitment. maybe having to trim some of the original shell aswell but only under the contact point of the new part.

That or chop up the g400 to add bits to the g500 but not sure how that might work.

maybe making custom parts out of fibreglass is better? I have a fair bit of
fibreglass building skills from making car parts and kayaks when I were a lad. but this means making many things to get an end result quite a long time down the line. plus at the minute there are no FG tools or materials here so would have to buy in again.

have any of you ever modded a mouse or other device in this sort of way?
any tips before taking the plunge on buying parts or chopping up mice?
is sticking other parts on a better way than custom making parts?
or are custom addons the way forward?

thanks for reading.

small piece of acrylic bent to what ever angle your mouse side is and glue it on where your little finger sits? and just make sure its either sitting higher or perfectly level with the bottom of the mouse? (thats probably obvious but you never know aye)

took the 400 apart to have a think about how this could work.
maybe have a flat bit of plastic sticking out sideways, fitted to the base of the mouse inside, then just a small trim of the shell so that it closes properly. maybe stick a teflon mouse foot under it too so it slides like the rest of the mouse.

would like to use fairly ridgid plastic to reduce flex.

hmm looks like this might be a rare thing to try?

Ok so after some thinking about how this might work there is an idea forming. The current plan is to chop the g400 floor to remove the front and rear skids, also taking lots of extra to allow for triming later. The rear pad is larger so that will become the thumb rest and the front one the pinky rest.

Then once they are the trimmed to the perfect size the shell can be heated and flared out to meet the new wider rests. Just for a new look, going to wrap the plastic part of the shell in some kind of vinal, someone mentioned some 3m stuff.

Will take some pics as it progresses this week. Not even ordered the vinal yet so that is going to be a few days.

All this effort to improve an imperfect mouse. Only today did I realise that the g500 is basicly too small for my hand, which has been the issue all along.
used to have the g400 which was a good fit but the 500 feels shorter and lower.

any tips on bigger mice than the g500?
