Used to happen a bit but now it seems like every startup. The mouse doesn't work when I get onto the desktop, and I have to unplug and replug(?) the USB back in to get it working. Whats going on?

Would like to know a solution for this too. I used to get this quite a bit with my Copperhead on Vista 64, and has happened once or twice since moving to W7.

I had this problem with my old mx518. It turned out the cable going into the mouse had come loose and the connection wasn't been made soemtimes so i had to wiggle the cable about for the connection to be made again. I thought unpluggin/replugging the USB cable in/out the computer was making the difference to it working or not, but it was just because i was moving the cable about

I had a similar problem and a suggestion that seems to have worked was

try this:

control panel
search 'power'
'change power saving settings'
'change plan settings'
'change advanced power settings'
under USB settings, change USB selective suspend setting to Disabled

[edit] btw, it's worth reading up on the implications of this setting, from a quick read it seems it can reduce battery life if it is disabled on laptops
