Am currently using a MS Wireless Intellimouse explorer which has seen better days... left mouse button is becoming unresponsive, scroll wheel is a little past its best and generally doesnt do what I want it to do anymore as I have had it for about 4/5 years and my expectations have changed.

Will be used for gaming and general desktop usage.

I have 2 x 22" WS Monitors and would appreciate something which allows me to navigate them in a reasonable amount of time. A DPI selector for switching between games and desktop use would be appreciated but not essential.

Backward + Forward buttons for web browsing ESSENTIAL or at least two programmable ones for IE/Firefox.

A nice scroll Wheel is ESSENTIAL.

Wired OR Wireless considered, am just after the best performance for my money be it either of them.

Many thanks for any advice given.

Gimp.

i would suggest the G5, although i havent used the second revision of it, i have used the first revision and the G7 both of which are very similar. i also suggest going to a retailer and trying one first.

it features dpi switching up to 2000 dpi and should be within your budget (depending on where you purchase from)

Don't get The LogiTech MX Revolution.
I've had bad experience with mine...
Check my recent post if you want to know more..

Was kind of thinking of that so thanks.

The G7 looks almost PERFECT.

A 2nd button on the side for web browsing would have been superb but I suppose you cant have everything.

I strongly believe rightly or wrongly that wireless technology is now more than adequate for gaming and provides equal performance to wired ones.

What is the feeling regarding this?

The G7 is almost perfect, the problem is its no longer in production.

Good wireless is more then adequate for gaming in my opinion, but the cheap value wireless mouse and keyboard combo from your local pc store (assuming its not OCUK) will most likely not be.

personally i say there is no successor to the G7, although some may argue that the MX revolution is it successor. i would say just get the G5, its basicly the same mouse with wires and 2 side buttons

A wired mouse would save the hassle of recharging. (obviously)
Its so annoying when you forget to charge the mouse before you go to bed and you need to do some important work the next day :@

the G7 has/had 2 li-ion battery packs that take seconds to swap so one can be charging while the other is in use, this makes/made it almost impossible to forget to charge the mouse (im my opinion)

G7 wireless performance is (AFAIK/have experienced, owned one for over a year) flawless, but as the nice chap says, is no longer in production.
There are some about, though.
But it doesn't have the button reqs you state.
And as Jak says, the battery system is lovely.

Have found a Carbon Black G7 for £60 delivered.. BRAND NEW.

Am tempted. Am prepared to forgo the the button on the side as the mouse looks soo nice.

Is the DPI switching that usefull?

that depends on what you do, it you need to switch between presision movement and rapid movement frequently then yes, if you like a constant speed with your mouse regardless of what you do then no. you can always program the buttons to do other things if you find DPI switching to be useless

Heh, three minutes... pffft.
I'm off to sleep, climbing in the am today, so... yeah, post freely again. ;)
Have a nice day, all, and good luck with the mouse hunt, GM.

Edit: Would have been posted a minute earlier, but missed it by seconds. Pah!

Have you considered the new Razer Lachesis?

Has 9 buttons, all of which are I believe mappable and macroable, upto 4000dpi scalable in 125 dpi increments, 32kb onboard memory for upto 5 different saved profiles and looks and feels lovely as well :)

Absolutely nothing wrong with my MX Rev, its been without doubt, the BEST wireless mouse I've used (owned an MX700, an MX1000, and now the Rev).

Seems you got a bad one.
