Hi Folks,

I was experiencing some strange issues over the last couple of weeks and I am not a friend of sending stuff back just because it might be broken, so I would really appreciate your advice in regards to what's wrong with my system.

1) Problems I was/am experiencing
  • I used to have small lags in which the entire system (including mouse) froze. that started quite a while ago but I did not really care as I thought my windows installation was messed up (I basically plugged the HD of an old AMD PC into my new intel build without reinstalling)
  • These lags became more frequent. Sometimes just the mouse failed and the rest was going on (did not quite enjoy flying Jets in BF3 ever since). Some of these mouse-lags lasted longer and I heard the windows plug&play sound.
  • rarely, my keyboard seemed to have the same issues, but I was never quite sure. Once all USB devices (Mouse, Keyboard, Webcam mic) stopped working and re-plugging them did not help.
  • going to sleep mode and wake the PC up seems to help, even though it is not a proper reboot.

2) My initial thoughts

As both the keyboard and the mouse seemed to be affected, I was suspecting either a driver problem or a failing USB controller.

3) What did I do so far?
  • Worked with another (USB-) keyboard. Did not help.
  • Bought an SSD and did a clean installation of Windows. Did not help
  • Bought a PCIe USB-Controller and plugged all devices into that. No complete freezes so far, but the mouse still seems to be passing out every now and then. This is subject to further observation though as I just installed it earlier today.

I will try to get another mouse from work and try if it helps, but after that, I am really out of Ideas. I am asking myself:
  • If the mouse causes this, why did it affect other USB devices?
  • If it's not the mouse, what else could it be? Software has been completely replaced. The USB-controller is new as well.

4) The System we're talking about:
  • Intel i5 2500 (never overclocked)
  • Sapphire HD6870 1GB Vapor-X
  • Gigabyte Z68A-D3-B3
  • Crucial Ballistix Sport (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit
  • Corsair Force 3 240GB SSD
  • Samsung F3 1TB 7200RPM HDD
  • LG GH24NS70 DVD-RW drive
  • Windows 7 Professional x64 (Edit 13:55)

USB Devices normally connected:

  • Logitech G400 Mouse
  • OcUK Cheapo-Keyboard (and a Dell one for some testing)
  • Hercules HD Webcam
  • Noname Multi-Card-Reader (sometimes with CF Cards in it)

I do appreciate every bit of advice, thanks in advance!

Definitely sounds like a faulty mouse. If there is a loose connection or some part is overheating, it may be sending a constant connect/reconnect request. I can see how doing this at a high enough speed would affect other USB devices.

Try bumping up your Southbridge voltage up a notch from stock (No more than +0.1v) and see if that helps. Had the same problem recently and it seems to have cured it.

T345: Could you explain that? I don't see how another reinstall could change anything that hasn't been changed in the first place.

I will try to get a Mouse from work (or might even use my mouse on my work computer) tomorrow to follow that lead up. If not, I will probably look into raising southbridge voltage, even though I am not really a fan of solving problems by potentially creating other ones.

if the mouse has a fault, usually a break in the usb cable somewhere, it will discon and lag ur whole system trying to find it again

ive broke a lot mice in my time this is common^^

you can sometimes just replace the wire but not all wires are the same etc
sometimes it can be another usb device messing with it too

Not individually but with both installed at the same time. left 4 instances running for two hours or so. No errors.

btw.
I can definitely confirm that both mouse lags and system freezes are still there. Looks like it is worth to dig deeper into the mouse as a possible cause.

One thing you can try, stick everything USB device into the USB 2.0 Intel controlled one, then disable the Etron controlled ones in BIOS and see if that helps.

Might do that later on. While experiencing these problems, I have been shuffling the devices around all USB ports, right now they are all plugged to the PCIe via controller, but that did not seem to affect things much.

btw.
Thanks for all the valuable advice so far :)

I've got news.

a) I used the mouse for two days on my office computer. It is definitely faulty - office computer lost it repeatedly as well.

b) My computer has yet another problem. Still - especially while watching netflix or playing games, it freezes for a fraction of a second with the sound getting stuck as well.

Sounds like I'll have to send the mouse back and start playing with southbridge voltage. Any other suggestions?

btw.
The new USB controller is faulty as well - when I plugged it in the PCIe-Port, my computer switched on immediately (forgot to switch off the PSU). Since I installed it, the PC can't shut down, it would always boot up again straight away.

I think, we need Sherlock.
