Move away from Gmail

FastMail mapped to your own domain has my vote. I've recently switch from gmail/iCloud and the setup was beyond simple, as was transferring emails. I find FastMail's web UI to be outstanding, user friendly than gmail, and way better than iCloud.

Whatever you use, your email can be monitored but who cares? As long as you don't talk about making bombs, molesting kiddies etc nobody really cares about you - you're not that special :D (I mean that in a nice way).

People sometimes think survelliance etc means someone, a human is listening to or reading your every word. They're not. It's just data that could be analysed but is not necessarily is, and algorithms applied to weed out certain information (such as terrorist activity - which will help to protect us all).

Why not get your own domain and setup you're own email accounts? It will cost you a little but if you're that concerned about privacy that's probably a better option than using the free ones out there. The company hosting your domain could still listen in but it's probably the closest you'll get to privacy without becoming a hosting company yourself :D

well i like it, website works, app works. probably should buy the premium to support them, they have to make money somehow and as there's no adverts or selling your data. and the extra email addresses would be good, i like having 2, main one and one for spam/google services.

I'm transitioning to fastmail from gmail. 'Transitioning' because changing my address everywhere is a gradual process.

I chose fastmail because they've got a good reputation for privacy and security, not least because they're based in Australia and the laws there are pretty strong, see https://www.fastmail.com/about/privacy.html

I've also heard excellent things about protonmail, based in Switzerland for the same reason.

Edit: fastmail seems to have got a bit more expensive recently - I paid $20.99 in March for 1 year of 'Full' service, which is like the new 'Basic' service which is $30/year.

Why do you need an encrypted mail service?

I just want a mail provider that isn't going to get hacked every 5 minutes. I have been used Hotmail for over 15 years and have been hacked a couple of times in the last year - using LastPass as well FFS.

Not interested in it being a secure encrypted service. Any suggestions?

Probably your fault. Use Microsoft's authenticator app.

As far as I know Hotmail hasn't been "hacked" twice in the last year, so chances are it's down to your security username/password combo which has been exposed somehow. Use 2FA with the authentication app as Kia suggests.

The protonmail free account up to 150GB looks adequate to me, not clear whether you have to adopt their mail tool , or could stick with thunderbird via emap, or does that immediately reduce security of their 'end->storage-server' solution. ?

Biggest issues of changing (from gmail in my case) is the interim forwarding of emails from gmail, until folks get the new address - or have I got that wrong ?

wrt to transferring older emails (per a comment i made earlier too) , I do not see the problem with putting the majority in a local(on my PC) archive folder accessible from the email tool, so they would not need to be copied onto prontomail server, but could still be searched and used in composition of new emails.

its 500mb not GB and limit of 150 mails per day sent. Ive paid for the next level to support them as there's no advertising etc, to make it a bit cheaper you can select USD instead of euros so a tiny bit cheaper.

At the moment it doesn't support IMAP, SMTP, and POP3 setup, although this is in the features coming soon though. So not sure if you could use thunderbird at all? although im not clued up on that. (saying that a lot of stuff in that list is already implemented like 2fa)

android app works well, and i really hope they make a w10 app, but nothing in the pipeline as far as i can see.

as i receive emails I've just been either replying to them saying i'm changing, or going and changing the account, so every day get less and less on old account. Also just gone and changed the big accounts like amazon etc straight over.

list of coming features and faq here:

I didn't say anything about 'encrypted' - email encryption is a much bigger topic than just picking a provider, there are several ways to do it and all require a bit of work (PGP, GPG, S/MIME, etc.).

If your hotmail is being cracked but you're otherwise happy with them you should first try toughening your authentication as others have said, e.g. tougher password (you say you're using lastpass so presumably you've got a strong password already) or two-factor.

I have bought the paid for version of Proton Mail. So far, so good. Quick question though; it seems I can't create folders to store mail as I would do in Hotmail, and have to use tags instead. That's fine, but if I tag sent items (archiving at the same time), then delete those e-mails from Sent Items, they disappear from the Archive too.

Am I doing something wrong?
