Hi all,

I purchased one of the club 3D 5870s back in January, I have been happy with performance until recently when I have started to notice things like draw distances and dodgy shadows in Bad company 2 and the like

If I was to go back to the green side what would be my best move, the 5870 was my first high performance card from ATI, suppose I've never really settled into it,

Sli is an option, although I was put off way back when I had 8800s and lots of faffing around with profiles and the like, have things moved on for Sli?

And in fife too!

Sorry I forgot I took spec off sig
I7 920 @ 3. 6
Foxconn Bloodrage gti
6gb corsair ddr3
And the 5870

Would hope for £200+ from sale of 5870, could add upto another £200 I suppose
Cheers

480 overclocked is apparently equal in performance to 5870 crossfire, without the issues of multi gpu.

See the thread comparison on here somewhere. If you're plannign to spend around £400, then you can't go wrong with that.

You have issues with Bad Company 2 so you think going Nvidia will help......

Happy reading.

Two months and its still not fixed without ANY driver updates what so ever is leaving me wishing I never sold my 5870.

I miss it.......

There is no way in hell a 480 can keep up when a title is Crossfire optimised, maybe when its not.

It isn't, Crossfired 5870s are roughly 20-25% faster than a GTX480.

A single 5970 is roughly 20% faster (going by benchmarks done), and two 5870s are clocked higher on both core and memory.

The way I see it, you can either buy another 5870 for crossfire goodness, or sell your 5870 and get two GTX470s for SLI goodness. Individually the GTX470 isn't as fast as a 5870, but SLI scales better, and as a result puts two GTX470s on par with two 5870s. Seeing as you already have a 5870, and would make a loss selling it, I'd suggest crossfiring your current card with another 5870

One reason I'm considering selling my 5870 cf is cos it's too damn hot, the room temperature goes up a lot with two gpus whacking out 85ºC each, uncomfortably so if u sit right next to the PC (unless of course the room is cold in the first place).

:D ok

have you tried 10.4's they are the best imo

So you guys saying the latest drivers 10.8 which im on are worse for BC2 and the like,

Im downloading the 10.5s now,

Also the new nvidia drives leaked today are getting good reports so far for fixing their issues

ahh the drama, still considering things

GTX480 for £295 on MM is tempting, i think a GTX470 SLI is more than i want to spend

Nvidia have the best drivers atm, 10.4a or 10.5 are the best drivers for BC2 for ATi, shocking i know, but ATi need to stop developing more cards and get their drivers sorted out before they lose customers to Nvidia because it's not just BC2, 10.7 drivers produced a memory leak for Borderlands after 10 minutes of gametime.

Maybe your monitors don't put out much heat, but my Dell 3008 is the main culprit in my case rather than the rest of the system.

Also 85ºC temp means little in terms of amount of heat dissipation into the room.
A better yardstick is to measure the power consumption as this is directly related to heat dissipation.

Just be thankful you don't have Fermi SLI.
