Move from 5870 to.......

Nvidia have the best drivers atm, 10.4a or 10.5 are the best drivers for BC2 for ATi, shocking i know, but ATi need to stop developing more cards and get their drivers sorted out before they lose customers to Nvidia because it's not just BC2, 10.7 drivers produced a memory leak for Borderlands after 10 minutes of gametime.

Isn't Nv struggling with their drivers in BC2 as well?
I seem to be hearing allot of 460 owners screaming for new drivers to solve various issues...

So you guys saying the latest drivers 10.8 which im on are worse for BC2 and the like,

Im downloading the 10.5s now,

Also the new nvidia drives leaked today are getting good reports so far for fixing their issues

ahh the drama, still considering things

GTX480 for £295 on MM is tempting, i think a GTX470 SLI is more than i want to spend

Sounds a good deal, but you might want to check if you get warranty (receipt) with the card.
According to Charlie () at semi-accurate the GF100 is beginning to have issues with failure rates, the term bump-gate II is being thrown around.

Maybe your monitors don't put out much heat, but my Dell 3008 is the main culprit in my case rather than the rest of the system.

Also 85ºC temp means little in terms of amount of heat dissipation into the room.
A better yardstick is to measure the power consumption as this is directly related to heat dissipation.

Just be thankful you don't have Fermi SLI.

nah the 2009w dont give out that much heat. I have the PC under the desk so i can feel the heat on my legs coming from the card exhausts, without water cooling i'd definitely advise against crossfire. you can feel it when you come in from another part of the house.

Wait what?

Watercooling just gets the heat off the parts quicker. Heatdump in the room is going to be the same.

If your cards are getting too hot space them out or throw some custom coolers on there. I got my zalman vf3000's for £20 each, does wonders for noise. Just make sure you have good rear/top case fan(s).

OP, grass is always greener on the other side. I've took delivery of a pair of 480's today, they are quicker than the 5870's but the heatdump in my room is insane even with the windows open and a pedestal fan going at full whack I feel like I'm being slow roasted.

Safe to say, I will probably be going back to the 5870's. Cooler, quieter and indeed slower, though not by as much as some people make out.

its an SLI problem afaik??

No, there is also quite a few issues with single cards as well with drivers and also with some cards being faulty, and other pretty serious compatibility issues with certain motherboards.

It's questionable, if too many corners are being cut, and quality is suffering in order to try and make the 460 profitable.

Hi all,

I purchased one of the club 3D 5870s back in January, I have been happy with performance until recently when I have started to notice things like draw distances and dodgy shadows in Bad company 2 and the like

If I was to go back to the green side what would be my best move, the 5870 was my first high performance card from ATI, suppose I've never really settled into it,

Sli is an option, although I was put off way back when I had 8800s and lots of faffing around with profiles and the like, have things moved on for Sli?

I would say a GTX 480, will be faster than your 5870. 460 SLI is an option but I personally never go near multi-GPU setups.

hmmm, i guess that's true. Then my second reason would be cos driver supports sucksss!!

i play a lot of bfbc2, im 470 sli and have no problems with the game.

i did a 20 minute fraps of online play

settings full hd, aa 16x, af 32, everything high, vsync off, hbao off

and i averaged 59fps 40 min 90 max

my cpu is the bottleneck :(

I'd wait and see what the 6 series has to offer, it's not that far off with a 6 series event on October 12th with possible release of cards on the 25th. This time frame also correlates with nvidias price cuts that will only last the next 6-8 weeks. You'd be a bit miffed if ati/amd released a card faster than the one you had just bought.

im with this guy
this is what i plan on doing.
the thought of a nice new box to open is wearing me down tho
must wait....must wait :D

and i probably will, even with one though eyefinity CTDs a lot. I also miss the game profiles you get with nvidia drivers which is useful for older games.

that will be nice wes
must contain a 480 or something to that nature
something i can peel the new plastic off, and think " yeah, waste of another £350 "

Only time I had a ctd with eyefinity is when I played warhead, set everything to max at 5760x1200 but forgot to take off the 4x aa.

Epic lagfest followed by a ctd. :D

I went for the 480 from the MM, decent price and warranty all there

Will feed back on any noticeable differences, performance
