I currently have a Q6600 and a Striker Extreme 680i
the highest I've hit was 3.4Ghz but I could never get it stable and cool enough, I'm blaming the nforce mobo, or my Corsair 520W for this (and also my inexperience)

I was wondering, would a dual core with higher clocks make more of an impact in games such as Supreme Commander, Crysis etc. I saw some reviews on OCUK saying they could get their duals to 4ghz and beyond.

I'm thinking of selling my X3350 and getting an E8400. I got this DFI board last week and I've been unable to get the CPU stable at anything other than stock settings. Can't be bothered with messing around with GTL and VTT voltages until the cows come home, I want to fiddle for a few minutes and get some decent clocks. And most E8400s do 4ghz+ :) :)

Also good is that I should make a profit on swapping to the E8400 which will be useful as i am proper skint atm!

exactly the one im looking at. I've always wanted aDFI mobo, i couldnt have one last time as they hadn't released a P35 by the time i was buying so i was stuck with Asus. I love tweaking, and it looks like it has endless options. Do you have any other veiws about it?

Board layout is great, lots of room around the CPU socket...bios is very comprehensive, DIY northbridge heatsink means you can use whatever you want easily, although the supplied DFI one is pretty good anyway. Has onboard power/reset switches, small LEDs in various places showing power status for various parts....basically a great mobo, just requires time to get the best out of it.

Sorry to the OP for derailing the thread!

I am also thinking of moving to a chip that might just do 5GHz .. my Q6600 will hit 4GHz on air and I may be wiling to put my next chip under water .. we'll see! I wonder if I could sell my quad for reasonable money - need to check before I buy!

The only downside to this for me is that I know that my board is good for 470 with a dual core and 445 with the Quad so a new mobo will also be required or a chip with an 11x multi. So I need to factor in an X48 methinks.

Just thought I'd add my tuppence worth to this thread.
I went from a Q6600 G0 (which on various boards I could get to 3.1GHz undervolted, but it needed sooo much more power to get nearer 3.4+) and I went to an E8500 on the Gigabyte X48 DS4 board. Straight in a 4GHz, running cool and quickly with a 4870. I got the X48 cos I fancy true Xfire later, and never actually tried a Gigabyte board before - VERY impressed with it.

Overall system feels a fair bit quicker. Obviously most benches run substantially better. Part of my decision to ditch the quad was I'm running a server for most of our family stuff now, and have moved any encoding onto that, so I only really needed a dual again. Was hoping I could joing the 4GHz club, and most chuffed with the setup now.

Oh yeah, sold my Q6600 for £100, mostly on the fact it would slightly exceed 3GHz undervolted (so v.cool).
