I use my PC principally for gaming and internet browsing.

Am running 5900x +32gb 3600mhz ram (14-15-15-35) + 6800xt.

Nothing overclocked but gpu is undervolted a little.

Am itching a little so have been thinking about possibly moving to a 5800X3D chip - Worth it at all?

Or would it be better to save for a good few months and update the whole platform?

What resolution and what type of games?

I moved from a 5900X with similar RAM to a 7900X with DDR5 6000C30 RAM. The only game I saw a significant uplift on was MSFS. I am using a 4080 at 4K.

There are videos that compare e.g. 5800X and 5800X3D, like this one:

Your results would be similar. Personally, I wouldn't bother until you do a new gen/platform upgrade, but the games and res/settings might make it worth it in some circumstances.

I made this exact change a year ago. Sold the 5900x for 3/4 of the cost of the 5800x3d and I'd say games do feel smoother overall with better lows. It is noticeably slower on other things however, like installing games or pre-loading shaders but those tend to be one off things anyway so doesn't bother me.

At this stage though I'd wait and see what the next zen brings this year.

If it's gaming performance you want the 5800x3D is king in AM4. But maybe down the line the extra cores will win out? Up to you.

I'm going to say no. Performance won't be massively improved and you can go for AM5 for only a small amount more once you've sold your current kit.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £479.98 (includes delivery: £0.00)

Yes as a recent builder of an AM4 system, I'd recommend saving the extra for AM5. My PC is nice and I like it, but in hindsight spending a little extra here and there would've got me a better system. Stings a little seeing the components come down so quickly. AM4 is still kick ass so I'm still happy. Just need a better GPU and I'm set

Thanks to those who posted - have decided that it would be best to save for a bit and go for new platform.

Read up on a few reviews and came to the conclusion that the benefits of a 58003D upgrade were marginal - better to save and hope that the value of my existing kit does not drop too much!!
