Hi, I have ordered a new PC and I wanted to install my windows 7 from the disk. The thing is that this is currently running on my old PC and I don't know whether I can activate it (with the product key) on the new PC while it is still running on the old one.

After that I also wanted to upgrade to windows 10 (using the free upgrade) and I will need the product key there, so there I am also not sure whether the system will know that that windows product key is still registered to the old PC.

So does that mean that I have to somehow delete windows 7 from the old PC before activating it on the new one?

first thing you need to know is what version of windows do you have, OEM or retail?

OEM normally comes on pre built systems and is tied to the mobo and has a sticker on the case with a product key

retail you can move from PC to PC as long as its not active on another PC.

how did you get your copy of windows 7?

you can now do a clean install of W10 using their USB creation tool and activate it from a windows 7 or 8.1 key without having to do a upgrade from a previous OS.

Well I don't know that. I have a CD and Windows 7 leaflet and I bought the PC custom built from a website and I think the windows 7 copy was in the box separately. I have paid quite a lot for it, but it doesn't say anywhere whether it is the oem or retail version. How can I find that out?

Some people do say that it will say OEM on the product key sticker or that it will be in the product ID, but it doesn't say that.

if you get the product key you can enter it in the ms page for obtaining ISO's , if you have an OEM license it will refuse to give you the iso's and tell you to ask the oem provider.
[I suspect that OEM codes may have some number sequence in common but did not try and google it]

Type the following at the command line to Display Licence Information. This will state OEM or Retail or Volume.
