So here's a strange one...

Brand new 3TB drive. Hooked it up to PC 1, copied 6 hours worth of files to it. Removed it from PC 1 and installed it into PC 2. The partition is showing as "RAW" unformatted.

I thought the on-disk file structure of NTFS was unchanged between Vista and W7 (the OSes of the PCs involved)?

Both x64. It was formatted as a GUID partition using NTFS @ 64KB block size, of 3TB in size.

Both are modern systems, especially the W7 one.

Have you moved it back to the originating system yet to see if it's still okay?

Dodgy SATA port/cable?

Does the BIOS/UEFI pick it up correctly at the right size etc?

Nope, I could do that but to be honest I've run out of patience. Wiring up a crossover gigabit ethernet between the two PCs and am going to copy the files that way.

I had this happen to me the other day while moving a 2TB HD to another pc. To fix it, I just assigned a drive letter in disk manager and the drive status immediately changed from RAW back to NTFS with all my files intact.
