Moved house - bb connection problem

My brother has just moved house and got his ADSL reactivated at the new address. So far he has been unable to connect though. The exact details are a bit vague at the minute as I haven't been able to go and have a look for myself yet, but I thought I'd post what I know to see if anyone can help.

He uses a Netgear DG834G router and BT as his ISP. The DSL light is lit on the modem, but when it tries to connect the router web page status window says 'LCP is unable to authenticate' apparently. It seems that it does indeed have a link, as the correct line speeds are shown, but the router won't complete the log on process.

The encapsulation setting was set to PPPoA, which I thought should be set to PPPoE? Neither setting made a difference though. Any thoughts on anything else to try? BT have checked for faults on the line, and they can't make their minds up as to whether there is one or not, one minute they say there is, the next they say it's fixed.

No, it should be PPPoA.
If it's synching up but not authenticating, it's worth trying bt_test@startup_domain and seeing if that works.
But the ISP should have suggested that already.

Cheers, I thought I'd read somewhere that PPPoA wasn't use in this country, but I must have been wrong.

I'd heard of the test logon before, but couldn't remember what it was. Am I correct in thinking you should be able to view a specific web page at BT somewhere to confirm that it is working or not, or something similar? Will ping work on the test logon?

It was broken. Don't take it as evidence of a fault if the page doesn't load.

Sometimes.

The BT speedtest login (see FAQ) should work too, and should give you a site.

I'll get him to try that and the BT speedtest tonight. Presumably BT Broadband is not a Datastream product though?
