At some point in the last few months, I lost my paper counterpart of my license Then, I moved house. I went on the DVLA website, filled everything out, paid my £20 and today got both parts of a new license in the post.

Are the DVLA expecting me to send my old photocard back? Should I just cut it up and bin it?

your supposed to afaik, but i have two at the moment as i didnt send my old one back, that was 6 months ago, they havent written to me or anything

You are supposed to. I have done this twice in the last 2 years and not sent mine back - have heard nothing from them. They probably say this just to cover themselves.

The old one is invalid as soon as the new one was issued.

Only reason I can think why someone would want to keep the old licence is to use as ID on a night out when they're worried about stuff being stolen - but that's more for girls than guys.

Doesn't really make any difference whether you return it or destroy it though, just make sure you don't mix up old and new parts and then lose the new licence though.

Keep it, the DVLA have a nasty habit of losing entitlements from your license when you send it back (for any reason). I will never send my license to them without first making a copy. Heard lots of stories about people having to re-do their test because of this! (including HGV licenses etc for people who have proof they've worked for a company for years!... bearing in mind that most companies check licenses once a year also)
