Movie editing software for a simpleton

Hi, both my son and I wish to make some movies out of the countless hours of video we've taken on our respective camera's/phones etc.
We fancy something a little more involved than the Windows movie maker but nothing too complicated, especially for me!
Any idea's as to what I should buy? There seems to be loads of software available, its a bit confusing.
Would we need the latest version of software or is it more cost effective to get something out of date?
Also been a tight git, could I get one piece of software to work on both our PC's? Mine is quite a high performance PC running W7 and my sons is more mid-ranged, running Xp.

Another vote for Sony Vegas. Stupidly easy to use.

I suggest Pinnacle or Ulead Video Suite. They are both commercial and very easy to use. Sony Vegas is expensive.

Thanks for the replies, found Vegas 11 at a reasonable price. So went for that.
