Movie editor/maker?

Hi guys

Can anyone recommend a simple movie editor that is preferably free? I used to use Windows Movie Maker but for some unknown reason I'm having trouble getting it to work on Windows 8.1.

I've been using snagit it to record some desktop snippets so just need something where I can overlay some text at certain points and add my intro to the front of the recording?

Any idea's?

Alternatively, I'm not adverse to paying for something like adobe, monthly if they have something that is easy to use to create and edit this sort of thing?

Have a Look at Serif Movie plus.Not too sure how good the free version is but I got a site licence at work for it.

You could try Lightworks but I think there is a bit of a learning curve to it.

Ok, I'll look into that also. I just need something simple, cut/add bits together and add some on screen text or some commentary. May try and resolve the windows movie maker install issue..
