Movie Maker - Not enough memory available

I'm trying to make a (high resolution) movie from our holiday, with all our photos and videos. I'm using Microsoft Movie Maker. Firstly, on my desktop, it gets to about 5 minutes in, then the whole PC just shuts down. Without a blue screen. But I've been having problems with my PC for some time.

So I next tried on my laptop, which has 12GB of memory. However, it gets to about 65% before saying 'There isn't enough memory available to save this file. Try saving it at a lower resolution.' I have been able to save the movie at a lower resolution (720x480 DVD quality), but the photos don't look good on my hi-res tv.

There are 782 photos and 35 minutes of video. Movie Maker says the movie should be 2 hours and 6 minutes long.

Resource monitor says 4785MB memory in use, 7373MB standby, 0MB free!

So, my question is, how much memory will I need to do this sort of thing? For my next build I was going to go with 16GB memory, but I'm not sure that's going to be enough!!

WMM isn't really very well designed at all. After a quick google the feeling I'm getting is that Microsoft are standing firm on this and saying that WMM isn't designed to contain high amounts of elements - it breaks into a panic after a few hundred pictures causing the out of memory error you mentioned. 8GB is more than enough for the mainstream video editing packages.

You'd be best off transferring the project to another piece of software. A forum thread on another site mentioned GoPro Studio which is free?

Sorry I couldn't help more. Alas, WMM is only really designed for short videos... i.e. under 15 mins.

Actually, that helps a huge amount, thanks! Shame I can no longer g oogle things here in China, since it's once again blocked :(
