Hey there, So i bought the Samsung syncMaster 245BPlus, and i have no idea about watching HD movies, first of all i don't even know if this monitor supports HD movies?
If so, is there some kind of setting on the player or movie i have to change?
Or Do i just make it full screen size on the 1920x1200 (See this isn't the TrueHD Resolution... which is what confused me)
Or does the monitor need to have the HDMI? I thought that was only for playing HD from Xbox or PS3 or BluRay etc...

Thanks in Advance,
Combusted.

Playing HD vids in 1920x1200 degrades the picture slightly as its being stretched. That's running at an aspect ratio of 16:10 (standard for widescreen monitors). However HD vids are usually 1920x1080 (aspect ratio of 16:9) or 1280x720 or less for DVDs.

Dell and BenQ have started to bring out some 16:9 screens... i guess it's up to you to decide what's more important: desktop "real estate" or HD video watching!

(Personally i plan to get a 30" 2560x1600 screen - so it's all kinda irrelevant for me :D)

As he has an 8800GTX I guess he can use the Nvidia Control Panel to set the 1:1 pixel mapping? Black bands at the top and bottom but no stretching.

I can see where the appeal is, and I guess it depends on what you are going to use it for. Though when I play movies on mine (16:10), even with the black bands there, they are much larger than the 60 pixel difference (top and bottom) between 1080 and 1200. So even with a 16:9 aspect, I still think you will get some black bands.

Well, i knew about the black lines, my main query was 'am i watching it in HD?' I was watching The Prestige earlier, and some of the text was almost pixelated around the edges?

Should i set VLC to play at 16:9 Aspect Ratio? will that clear the stretchiness? or will using the Nvidia option be better?

Thanks for all your replies.

ah ok, well yeah you shouldn't need to make any adjustments really, i guess DVDs will look a bit poo when they're 'upscaled' to the resolution of your screen.

Just sit back a bit and you wont notice ;)

To watch movies in HD you are going to need a Bue Ray or HD DVD player and then movies in the Blue Ray or HD DVD format.
